I was wondering if there were anyone else here on audiokarma who have/had some classic Ortofon speakers.

I have the big 445 from 1975-76.

Theyre fitted with two 8 inch scanspeak woofers, 5 inch middlerange and a 0,75 inch soft dome tweeter. All drivers from scanspeak.

As far as i know Ortofon made two series of speakers in the middle of 70s.

First one was with the models 225, 335 and 445.

Second series was H15, p15, p20, p30, p45 and p75.

As far as my 445s i think they sound amazingly good. I have heard many modern speakers and I have never heard anything better except for Quad esl´s and Magnepans.

They don´t they did however :).

But from what I have heard it was pretty much an all scanspeak product.

These were built when scanspeak was very new. It seems like from the begining they were just fitting there drivers into speakers instead of selling them just as driver units.

You can find them in some Dynacos, Scan dyna, Scan sound etc.

I like my Ortofon cartidge on my Rega P1 and scanspeak makes nice drivers I had some in some Nelson Reed speakers and they were very pleasant and non fatiguing to listen to. I think you did well.
 
No one with any experience at all off them. Hmm, guess I have to take some more pictures of them and put here, so all of you can see what you are missing out on.

I don't think that they had much distribution in North America. I have heard of them, but this is the first pair that I've seen. Good looking speakers, though.

I have a set of 445

Hello to All

This is my first post on this forum, I bought this set in 1976 or 77. I went through a long period of not listening to them, and I find that the ortofon's are easy to listen to. At the time the BOSE 901 were king but when I compared the orofon's they sounded better. Looking to revive analogue music in my house and introduce my son to gourmet analogue instead of fast food digital. He asked me, how do you fast forward to the next song on a LP? :scratch2:

I am In Florida visiting relatives and came across a set of 335's in their garage. I also found a set of Realistic speakers that caught me eye first, because of the nice looking cabinets.
The Ortofons were very dusty, and I had no idea what they were until I took off the grille. WOW !
Drivers are intact, I think. Going to clean up and audition later today.
I will also include pictures.
I have Svenska roots. Guten tag?

Found your question about Ortofon speakers. I have a pair of P 75. I bought them 1978 I think and they are still running. I have changed the basselement twice. They are very heavy and big, but have a wonderfull sound. There are five elements in this speaker.

Well I'll kick this thread back up. Just picked up a pair of Ortofon 445's off CL. They've seen some better days. But from the quick demo I did, I think they deserve to get put back into working shape. Not really much info on the web about them. So maybe I'll document the rebuild if anyone might have interest in the future. Cool to find something quite unusual. What am I member 3 in the Ortofon 445 club?
 
They look quite formidable, and on top of those blocks even larger still, never had the opportunity to hear them, but would like to, seems they have a great connection to the ScanSpeak drivers, which are well documented.

I've had a set of 445 for a decade or so. been in storage most of the time. Tweeters were bad so I dropped in a set of vifa that look the part. Recently re-worked my audio area, might be time to hook them up for a listen.

im new to these speakers, but from what others have said is they were built by scanspeak. you may want to try the auction site and search for that name. or try parts express and see what they have thats close.
 
@bolero if the tweeter buzzes but still works you might be able to fix it if you're confident with this type of thing. If it is like the similar looking Vifa D19 there are three plastic clips clamping the faceplate and diaphragm to the magnet. Carefully unclip these and disassemble to inspect. The Vifa tweeters have ferrofluid; not sure if the Scans do but if this dries up it can cause buzzing and reduced output.

it works fine 99% of the time, I only get buzzing occasionally

how do I go about replacing the fluid?
