Technics SL-1200 MK2 tonearm rewire mod

I finally got around to modifying my SL-1200 MK2 table. In its stock form it's a fabulous performer but its main weakness is the wiring.
The arm itself is nothing special but I really like it for what it is and feel that it wasn't worth upgrading.

The reason for this rewire is due to the inferior tone arm wires (tin plated copper??) and the cheap cabling / rca plugs.
A single continuous run of wire will eliminate five contact points, three of which are in the tone arm / headshell assembly
and two on the circuit board underneath the tone arm pillar.


NOTE: This rewire can be reversed but is intended for those who don't mind a "fixed headshell" style.


A single run of 28 awg x 4 Discovery tone arm wire from cartridge pins to preamp was used. Also, a Jelco HS-20 headshell
was purchased because adjustable azimuth is required for this mod.


Materials required for insulating the wire and interconnect construction (or your own recipe).

- Cotton tubing
- Braided copper shielding
- Nylon jacket
- WBT male rca plugs
- Assorted shrink tubing


Required tools for whole project:

- Wire strippers and cutters
- Drill (1/16" and 5/64" bits)
- Basic soldering iron


Getting started:

- Remove rubber base and metal plate - you don't need to remove the plastic base at all.
- You don't need to remove the whole tone arm assembly either, only the arm itself.
- There are only two screws that secure the arm to the pillar. To get to it, unscrew the green circuit board and you will see the two screws.
- IMPORTANT!! Set the antiskate to zero before removing the arm and make sure arm is reinserted in the same manner.

For the cable construction, I found it easier to separate to two L/R signals using individual cables which were then insulated and shielded.
Insulation, shielding and mesh was fed through 4 1/2 feet of the total 6 feet of tone arm wire with the remaining 1 1/2 feet to be used for the tone arm.

Ps- the arm actually is kinda special- the bearings are superb.

The tone arm tube along with the internal wiring are things that can use some support- dampening of the tone arm tube and replacing the internal wire.
 
VERY nice!

I'm convinced, after trying both a Rega and Jelco on my SL-1200MK2, that the primary problem with the SL-1200 is the crapola wiring in the arm. The mechanics of the arm are fantastic, the wire just sucks something terrible.

Having KAB replace my internal wiring and terminating it at a 5-pin DIN plate was the best upgrade I've ever had done. Period. I imagine this is even a step above that.
 
I'm curious as to why the antiskate setting to zero is important?

If it's not set to zero prior to removing and reinstalling the arm assembly, the little copper color antiskate catch wire inside the pillar disappears from view and antiskate will not function.

I really like that. I rewired mine a year or so ago, with Cardas 0,33ga.
Redid the ground at the same time. I was continuous until the headshell,:scratch2: hmmm, maybe I'm goin back in.
 
I plan on doing this to my SL-1700MK2. Do you think it's worth bypassing the circuit board? I kind of like the muting function, but could do without it if it really makes a difference in sound quality.

If you like the muting feature then leave that alone. You really want one continuous signal path with no breaks for purer sound.
The circuit board on a 1200 has two solder connections (not good)... not sure about your 1700, however.

Excellent post!

I bought my KAB Technics with optional cardas tonearm rewire & RCA connects, so I never heard the 'before and after' results of this mod. I just took it on good faith that Kevin (of KAB) was making a good recommendation on this upgrade.

And in line with thedelihaus' comment about the tonearm quality, yes it is very high quality. No need to belittle it in any way. I think it is something special, especially given the retail price of the turntable.

You might consider also adding the KAB tonearm dampener. I can vouch for it's effectiveness, in both improving tracking and sound quality.
 
Wow, it looks like it is reasonably simple for a newbie to rewire a 1200, especially if one keeps the swappable headshell capability. Hmmm....
 
I rewired my 1210 arm with Van den Hul MCS150M wire. The sound is pretty good compared to the original tinned copper wire. The drawback is that this V.d.H. stuff is so stiff that it impairs the low friction of the tonearm bearings.
I would not use this wire again.
