Pick up a 4000 yesterday and need a little help if possible .

First the string is run wrong , not connected to the AM at all , posted a pic . So if anyone has a shot of the layout , say me from many hours of guess work .......

Then when cleaning found a wire and I think is a ground on the FM tuning board . Also included a pic of the location and the wire so if it looks familiar to anyone . I have a probe pointing to the location I think one end goes .

Unit does work without the wire .....

Hey Barney, the 4000 is a well liked receiver around here, may I suggest you download the service manual, it will have the diagram you need.
Casey

Diagram from SM may not help much as you see detail of windings is hard to see and as you can see slightly different from actual chassis:

Some closeups of tuning string on my 4000. Pointer is at about 98 on dial.

How does the fuse and plug area look?

Do all the lights work?
There are some white wires on the top side.
Sorry I didn't take a full top view and I already closed up my 4000.

If the unit works without the loose wire, it may be just sloppy work cuttings that fell in the receiver. It doesn't look like it has any exposed wire where it ever connected to anything.

Thanks Terral , the pic's looks pretty much how I figured it to be last night . Just couldn't get the string tight enough for the pointer to go all the way across the dial . Now I see how the two spring go might get it to work this time . If you look at you sixth pic and compare it to my shot with the probe , the missing wire is there . Goes from the spot I'm pointing to but now know to where ....

On yours are a couple of the boards soldered up with a Sh*T load of cold and poor joints ? The tenth pic of the bottom , the two green board in the middle . I had to reflow 90% of mine and some two or three times to get a good flow .

On the lamps they seem to all working except for a couple , the AUX is out and burnt up the plastic holder . Also the pointer the FM lamp for it is out . What color is it suppose to be ?

Once again thanks for the great info .

pics of pointer: FM is reddish orange, AM is lighter yellowish orange. The color is from the pointer not the bulb itself which is clear.

The only problem I had -- and the reason I got mine for $25 at a yard sale -- was all the lights were out - dial, meters, indicators...
Found a loose connection on the selector shaft, resoldered that and all lights back on.

Thanks to Terra1's fine pics the string is strung . Took longer then expected but seems to be working . Tough with two tuning wheels to get in sync with each other .

When I get my 5000A back from my Son , the 4000 will be compared to it .
Bet there not much difference , I do know I like the layout of the 4000 better then the 5000A .

My son borrowed the 5000A while his 8080 was getting a few solder joints for the lamps resoldered . The 8080 was done months ago and he must like the 5000A because I've told him more then a few times to come and get it .
