Substitute Mids for Quantum series

Heresy some may say. But I would like to hear from anyone who has had good sonic results with substituting the Quantum series mids with other models or heard of anyone who has.
I have seen some Realistic dome mids that seem nearly identical but I'm not sure how they are speced in comparison to the originals or how they may sound. The dome mids for the Dahlquist DQ10 also seem very similar. Others I have looked at include Vifa, Morel, ADS. I understand that to go this route may require a crossover mod. I am just looking to find a good match for the EMIT tweeters and pursue the line source idea these speakers were made for with the best sonic results possible. I'm curious why I have not seen any modified Quantum series, but I'm still pretty new so maybe I just haven't seen enough.

Not sure if those Realistic mids are going to be a very good subsitute, probably lower quality units. I think based on what I have seen out their the ADS are about as close as your going to find, but you will find it hard to get a pair that will drop in and fit the exact hole as I think they are a slightly differenct size. And the ADS use the same tinsil wire type of set up that is the main problem with the QLS domes. You might try bothering Infinity parts for some as I recently was able to get some brand new ones from them. They look slightly different as the dome is a silk dome rather than that dope covered cloth one, and they don't have the tinsile wire in the front of the speaker they run it behind the plastic plate, and the plastic plate is textured rather than smooth. But the part number is the same as the old one and it bolts right in and to me sounds the same.

I suppose you could improve the sound of the speaker but I'm sure, if you didnt get lucky the first time, one would would have to go through a bit of trail and error not to mention expense.
Ideally original replacements would be best.
The Dahlquist Peerless mids are 4 ohm as oppsed to 8.
You might look at for a set of Audax TWO37YO 1 1/2" softdomes as Infinity, at one time, used these as replacement drivers for the Peerless mids.

Are you sure about that? I have both speakers and though I didn't test the DQ-10 mids they "looked" exactly the same. Also I had thought some of the QLS line of speakers had 4 ohm and 8 ohm midbass speaks in there at some point...

I've never run across a 4 ohm Peerless soft dome midrange but that doesnt mean it never was utilized. The part number seems to be the same for all Quantum models.
Here's a couple meter readings from a DQ and Infinity mid.

Actually, now that I look closely, the DQ driver and the Infinity driver are marked on the back 4 and 8 ohm respectively

I heard from one AK member who substituded a pair of dome from te old Infinty Monitors he got off ebay. He put them in a pair of Q5's and says he thinks the sound is very similar or even a little warmer. I don'r see much of a chance of finding several pairs of those for my QLS1 project but now I'm thinking that a pair of them along with some original domes could be a sweet mix.

Does anyone else have a story about mids they have substituted on the Quantum series? Any more suggestions? I suppose any sweet sounding 8 ohm dome of similar size could work but the trial and error to find them could become expensive as one AK member suggested. That's why I'm trying to find some success stories.

Is there a chance you might want to sell a pair of your spare mids? Why do I feel like I'm asking someone if they would sell me their children?

Well there ya go, I stand corrected. I was under the impression that Infinity put BOTH 4 and 8 Ohm in the QLS line at different times during production (not in the same speaker). Just an understanding based on reading here at AK.

I never tried emailing them I always just called them directly, which puts you in touch with always some asian girls that can't speak english to well. I have found that some days they say they don't have any and then I call back a few hours later and another girl says they have some.

Enclosed is a pic of the new midrange dome that they provided me with, I gave them the part number from their techincal sheet and they then billed my credit card and in a few days this is what I got.

Enclose is another pic of the drivers that they provided me with, they charged me a little over 130 dollars apiece for them. I am not wanting to sell any as I have purchased a few other QLS-2's that I had planned on using for parts for the future but they seem to nice to part out so I instead plan on refurbishing them as I hate to see people strip perfectly good speakers just to make money on the sales of drivers.

I got these off of an auction, and they need some work and are all left hand speakers but I figured you never know what I might find later maybe a few right hand ones that I can match to these. Overall when I got them they are quite clean just need the bass drivers refoamed. And unlike my other QLS-2's this version has the rear firing EMIT's. I don't know how many QLS-2's had the rear firing EMIT's like the QLS-1's but I would love to find a few right hand ones with rear firing EMIT's to match these with. I will just keep them and sooner or later I might find a few odd ones to pair these with.

That midrange looks to be the Audax driver that Infinity used as a replacement for the Peerless.
Amazing and fortuitous that you were able procure them as they've been discountinued for quite some time.

I believe I have a set of those AUDAX kicking around from my Q5's that I bought without the orig dome mid-tweets. I replaced them with originals I got off the Bay.

I'm so glad to be in the company of guys like you and others I have met on this site who are out there saving these old giants. Nice trio of Q2 lefties!!! I do hope you find some right side mates for them.
I would brush up on my broken English and try calling to see if I might reach the right lady to score a pair but I'm not financially prepared to spring for $130 each right now. I appears you can't train thoroughbreds with the same budget as raising ponies. I suppose I'll keep looking on ebay and asking around the forum for now.
If anyone does think they have come across an affordable substitute for the Quantum mids that sounds good and is available I would love to hear about it.

c5galaxy-I have a pair of Infinity Monitor IIas that share the same mid-range. I do not believe the first Monitor shared this same mid-range. I am sure someone will corretc me if Im wrong. I have given a thought to pulling the mids on the Monitor Iis and sending my Q2s in repair. But damn they Monitors sound so good. I dont want any negative karma so to speak.

I recently replaced the mids in my Q5's with mids purchased at Parts Express. After searching for direct replacements and not having much luck,I found these which have the same specs as the originals Dayton DC50F-8 2" Dome Midrange but have a round mounting plate. Since I am keeping the Q's and was more interested in sound than being completely original these have worked great for me.
