Surround Sources Thread

When you need surrounds there are links posted in a lot of different threads but I never seem to find them all in one place. Here's a collected list of various sources for surrounds and surround kits (including shims, glue etc.) that have been posted on AK. If you have more to recommended please post them and I will edit the list accordingly. Maybe we can get this linked in the Reference Threads sticky.

Pricing comparisons based on one item (12” surround kit) in May 2010, shipping cost not considered, so your mileage may vary for any given product.

The List:

AK member GordonW: Surrounds sold separately (not kits), low prices, correct sizes for certain individual speaker brands/models. Recommended by AKers everywhere.

Parts Express http://www.parts-express.com/home.cfm Kits; excellent service; prices good because (as of May 2010) their standard kits (non model-specific) such as the generic 12", have 2 pairs of surrounds (4 pieces) per kit, so you will have a spare set to use for another set of speakers later. Although neither the catalogue description nor the kit instructions mentions it, one set is supposedly for slanted edge cones and the other is for flat edge cones. I thought the 'angled' set did not look like it had much angle to it, but I have not tried to use them so I can't comment on their effectiveness.

Simply Speakers http://www.simplyspeakers.com/index.htm Kits; extensive selection of sizes including correct surrounds for various speaker brands/models; prices comparable to Parts Express.

Refoamkits.com http://www.refoamkits.com/ Kits; good selection with detailed list of of sizes including correct surrounds for various speaker brands/models; prices a bit lower than average.

Orange County Speaker http://www.speakerrepair.com/ Kits; correct sizes for certain individual speaker brands/models; prices a bit higher than average.

Main Electronics Vancouver BC http://www.mainelectronics.com/ Surrounds sold separately (not kits); cost about half or less that of average price of comparable kits from most vendors – in Canadian dollars that is.

Mat Electronics http://www.matelectronics.com/ Sells surrounds separately (not kits), very low prices, limited selection, no detailed measurement info.

M-Sound http://stores.ebay.com/M-Sound eBay store; Kits with dust caps included; correct sizes for certain speaker brands/models; prices about average. Ebay is an AK sponsor: click on the eBay ad at AK to generate revenue for AK.

eBay also has various sellers and stores; your mileage may vary. Ebay is an AK sponsor: click on the eBay ad at AK to generate revenue for AK.

The info for Rick Cobb should be added to the list.

Rick Cobb rcobb@tampabay.rr.com Sells kits for specific speaker systems. Kits include a pair of surrounds, adhesive, detailed instructions, and a 30 Hz CD for centering woofers. Excellent quailty and matching of form and fit. Mainly sells through ebay listings/store; ebay name is looneytune2001. Typical 12" kit is $19.99.

I've used bootapest http://myworld.ebay.com/bootapest2&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID good prices willing to combine orders good responsiveness to question

I've switched to MAT as they seem to have the best prices and the foams are no different than what I've bought from Gordon for most applications

Haven't tried these guys out but seem to have decent prices

In my opinion $20 for a pair of foams is ridiculous

Cool, thanks for the submissions. I'll let this run a bit and then add your suggestions to the list along with anything else that pops up.

Orange county speaker no longer sales speakers or parts. They are now GLS audio according to the site that the link listed here takes you to. MAT & MAIN electronics web addresses not valid .

I'm not sure if Msound is selling anymore or not. Ebay link shows seller is 'currently away' but I'm thinking this might be permanent....

Very possible since those links were posted back in 2010. Im hunting a refoam kit for a pair of Cerwin vega AT-12's. Parts Express wants 34 bucks ...a bit high I think. Simply speakers seems like the best bet but Im open to any other companies/suggestions if you have any.

Got my surrounds for the AT-10s I refoamed and my 12TRs that I will be from R. Cobb off ebay. The 10s are taking a pounding and holding up great. Looneytune2001 has them for 24$ shipped with glue.
Got my Advent foams from him too.

Cool... that name has come up in a few post I read b4 making my post. Since those threads are very old I didnt know if any of the info was still valid. I'll definitely go check him out!

Sorry, Tox! You're getting called up for some old post editing!

For what it's worth, I've had good luck with Rick Cobb. Especially with specific drivers. Rick knows his stuff.

For the generic drivers, I've used "uneeksupply" on eBay. They don't have a lot of options, but what they have is cheap.

MAT went away, but HES (Hospitality Electronics Supply) showed up, similar type outfit, similar limited selection and pricing, etc.

Looks like HES has a selection of surrounds for CV.
