Did you guys know that you can get FREE shipping on your order? Yes, that's correct -- no minimum order fee and no shipping charges. The "secret" is that you must send them a check or money order by mail. Time-wise, it will add a couple days to get your parts over ordering them via internet or phone -- the time it takes your letter to get to Minnesota. See their "terms and conditions" on their website -- they cover themselves for very heavy but cheap items. Unfortunately, Mouser doesn't offer the same terms.

Digi-Key also offers (with registration) online forms to compose your order. It's like a web shopping basket and tells you if item is in stock, extends the price, etc. If you mail you order in, you can just copy the online form.

All my orders are shipped USPS First Class Mail, and shipping charges are generally under $3. Hardly worth my time to avoid a $3 charge and wait an extra week to get my parts.
 
Yeah, Digikey is about 300 miles Northwest of me and orders placed midday can arrive the next afternoon for First Class Rates.
I can see how this might work for someone ordering International or a lot of items and living on the Coast.
 
I am very impatient, when I order something, I would rather pay the $3-$4 and have it much faster.
I have been pretty disappointed with Mouser lately. I used to get my orders in about 3 days, last couple of orders has been more like 5-6 days. I will order some things from ebay and maybe someplace like home made electronics, and I will have those orders days before Mouser has been getting here.
I am sure it is just because Ido not know my way around, but I liked Mouser because I could save carts etc.......but going to go back to digikey next time if possible just because of the lag time in shipping.
And if this frustrates me, no way I would send in a check/money order to save under $5.00.
 
A side note: Digi-Key's founder shared an office with my uncle all through grad school at the U of Minn. About 10 years ago my uncle & I took a drive up to Thief River to pay Ron a visit. He gave us the nickel tour of the facility...most impressive! HUGE...acres of parts. Highly automated...looked like a fun place to work. Quite the story behind the company...started in the guy's garage selling kits for electronic keyers for ham radio. Thus the company name...Digi-Key.

Does digikey still cover shipping costs when paying with check or money order?

Add your state tax if your state has mandated that. PA has.

My order took under a week from stamped envelop in the mailbox to parts on my deck. Mouser can take that much time, too with normal shipping options.

I need to order 1 cap.

I can't find how to do this on their site.

Would you be willing to outline the steps you took? Address? Order form?
 
So you include a sheet of paper with your order with part numbers written on it along with a check, and make your check out to digikey? What address did you send your check to?
 
What cap you need?

I used the Digikey address, attn: orders, used a stamp, cost more then the cap usually. Their address is in Section I, 10 of the terms and conditions, 701 Brooks Avenue South, Thief River Falls, MN
