Coral BX-300's?

Hey guys,


I took my friend to the thrift the other day to find her a turntable and I saw a really nice pair of older looking speakers there. They had a little emblem on them that said "Coral" which I had heard of before, and for $18 they seemed really well built and a good deal, So I happily took them home.

They're really pretty speakers and look to me like a late 60's design. I've looked all over but I can't find any good info on them. Does anyone have any idea what I have here? haha I gave them a listen and they sound really nice with a nice vintage tone to them. The grille ins't removable so I unscrewed the back. Looks to be a 10in woofer, a horn tweeter, and a 4in midrange. They're really efficient, and sang well off of a 22wpc Kenwood reciver. I know I'm really happy with them, and I was just wondering if anyone had heard of these or could help me figure out what era they are. Thanks for any help guys!

I auditioned them standing upright on the top of my bookshelf which might've been a bit too high. I'm gonna be putting them on there side on a lower shelf so it's around ear level.

Hi Michael, nice collection of Coral documents. I have a pair of 8CX-1 that I have been trying to find any information on. I didn't look at all your documents but did look at most and didn't see it. Tony if you haven't thought about it yet, think about opening them up and replacing the old filter capacitors in those. It will likely improve the sound as many of those old caps will drift out of spec over the years. I have not yet changed caps on old speakers and not had an improvement in sound. Those could be as old as 1968.

A nice little 10inch 3-way with horn upper I believe. Site claims 102db so yes quite efficient..go great with a little tube rig I would think.

I have a pair of the BX-300, Nice speakers, a little bass heavy but good sound overall. I got my pair for $25 about 15 yrs ago, They still get played often.

Did you know that the Mid-range in those was originally designed for Mid-Range?? :D Wow!

All kidding aside, I think you will get a better sound if you place them on their side, as you suggested and as shown on the pamphlets. The vertical alignement of the mid and tweeter will help with imaging. It does not show or mention it anywhere, but I doubt they are mirror-imaged, which might screw things up a little bit.
