My Homemade WC-22, Watcha Think? Now with finished pics!

Since I can't get any appreciation from my wife on this project, I thought I'd post some pics of my hard work here.

Had some 3/4 MDF sitting around and got free (mahogany?) veneer off craigslist, so I thought, why not. I haven't put the poly on yet.

The case on the right is an original. Lemme know what you think!

I can post more pics if anyone wants!

Beautiful work. I can't tell which one is the original and which is yours! It looks like you are patterning off an early version of the WC-22. The first ones had the stretcher at the back and no pass through holes for the feet to attach to the bottom plate. Also, the bottom cutout looks different.

Interesting. What are the later wc-22's like? I just patterned off the case I had. I was thinking about adding a 2nd ventillation hold on the bottom, because the 2270 has amps on both sides.
 
Well did some research and it looks like I'm gonna add some holes to the bottom. Apparantly the original case was from a 2285b I have and the amp section is on one side, thus one hole.

The best part of this project was that all it took to make was a router with 2 bits, a small table saw, clothes iron, and circular saw!
 
Beautiful work! Should look awesome once the finish is done. Very nice job on the mitered corners.
 
I'm just curious about the two router bits.
You need one to cut the spline for the grill but what is the other bit used for.
Also, since you have a table saw, what part did the circular saw play.

The cabinet does look very nice. Good job. :thmbsp:
 
I used a flush trim bit for the veneer and a plain 1/2 inch straight bit that i used to cut out the holes.

I haven't gotten to the grill yet, and I don't want to go buy another router bit, so i was planning on using my dremel with a cutoff wheel that I have a router attachment for.

The circular saw was for cutting the boards. The table saw I have would only do a 12 inch cut. I used the table saw for cutting the 30 degree bevel on the face and the "lip" that the receivers faceplate sits in.

I did forget to mention I used a 1 1/2 inch holesaw to cut the radius of the upper grill corners.

The 2285B case is different from the others and is made of plywood and not particle board. The pass through holes for the rear feet are in a slightly different position for the 2270.
 
Super nice looking case, much better than the original. Imagine a brand new wood case, I can only dream of it. But you, on the other hand...
 
Wow, that's some nice work! The edges on the front are much sharper than the original case. What are you going to use for the metal screen on top?

If this one is complete, I would sell it as a 2285B case and then make another to fit your 2270. I think there is demand for a correctly reproduced version of the WC-22 for the 2285B and 2265B.
 
I was planning on using a wire mesh trash can cut up and painted black. We'll see how that looks and then decide.
 
For finishing look into using Watco walnut stain.

Nice job. Not as easy as it looks - eh!

I built one for my 1200 a few years back. The trick is the bottom slides have to line up the faceplate with the outer trim.

Yeah, I just set the receiver in and I made that cut too deep, so I'll have to make some spacers.

I dunno if I want to stain it. I put some water on it to see how it would look with just some poly and it's as dark as the original wc-22.
