My Enigma speakers - pic included!

...Literally... It says so on their boxes, here's the story...

Talking to my friend at the thrift store I'll be working at this summer (starting tomorrow), he says he has some speakers that "cost $800 in the 80s"...Shows me these extremely solid, real wood veneer 2 way bookshelf speakers. No brand on them. He has the original double boxes, they have the word "ENIGMA" on each, and a customs stamp from canada.

Anyone know anything about these or what drivers they may use? It won't be until friday that I can pop the drivers to see what I have.

In the meantime, I got them at 4pm, as of 11:05 I have listened 4 hours today with my Acurus and Muse. these things suck down power like crazy, the muse controls them, but I doubt anything else I have would. But the sound...mids are liquid like my ohms, but more detailed than warm, without being thin at all, highs are great with FLAC, but only ok with mp3s, bass is tight and substantial even for trance music up to SPL in the high 90s. I like these a lot. Good bass 5 feet from the rear and side walls with sealed 8" woofers. This is coming from a guy who can't live with a sub without an xmax in the 20s

Looks like an Audax tweeter, but I'm mystified by the mid/bass driver. It really is an Enigma.

I remember seeing their whole lineup at an audio trade show back in the 90's, I believe the company was located somewhere in Toronto. I have a pair of Enigma "Minx" in the living room as fronts for my surround system. Drivers are all Polydax (Audax).

I had a pair of B&W DM-10's with those woofers.

Weird!

They are the same woofer from pics of the B&W I could find, but the documentation on the DM10s claims they were designed and built by B&W.

I definitely believe that they are Audax, but this is weird.

Also, one of the woofers is coated with a thin layer of dark damping material or sealant, professionally done. I can't hear the difference with 18 year old ears in a well damped room and good upstream components and good source material, so I don't know what it's for really.

Opened them up finally today. B&W BM200/22 woofer and polydax tweeter. X-over uses air core inductors and 11 components per speaker. Braced to. These are some serious speakers and sound like it to.

I have a set of Enigma Minx Speakers. They were made by Vic Lipton owenr of Star Audio on Avenue Road in Toronto. The drivers are from Audax in France. Two speakers with an 8 inch woofer and 1.3" textile midrange tweeter.
Ported in the back. Speaker box is 1.7 cubic feet to obtain the best performance out of the woofer. Bass as low as 30Hz. Sound awesome.
Checked out the speakers at Madison Sound in the U.S. Components are worth more than $400 USD today to replace. Also made a book shelf with a 6.5" woofer and a three speaker unit with a passive radiator. I am second owner and they originally sold for $800 a pair. great buy. Sound better than my old Original Advents and my Energy Pro-22`s.
