I saw your other message on this one. Do recap the regulator board & the protection board...they are always a trouble spot on these units. New zeners and error-amp transistors (Q3 & Q4) in the regulator are also not a bad idea, as well as new heatsink grease on the TO-220's and even on the irreplaceable output transistors...the original stuff is certainly dried out and turned to dust.

Dave,

After seeing those pics I started to laugh just imagining myself trying to work on that beast! I can hardly find my way around a phone booth let alone inside that monster!

I sure wished we were neighbors, it would be fun to watch this in real time.

How about the A5002? Did you take a peek at her yet?

Keep us all posted!

Thanks again!

Had the top metal cover beadblasted to remove all the flaking paint and rust. Then sent the panel to a powdercoating company locally. The panel looks brand spank'n new..

avionic,

I can't wait!

I've got a spot all cleared out for the SX-1280, bought a new roll of speaker wire, have my Pioneer CT-F9191 all ready to plug in, and my speakers all wired and ready to go . . .

So once that baby shows up here she'll be operational as soon as I can get it out of the box and onto it's spot on my stereo table.

Thanks for all your help!

AWG-060 CCA..Real dirty switches and controls.
Taking extreme measures- Switch removal and disassembly for cleaning and deox-it treatment. Started with the largest one first.Found extremely oxidize contacts. Have already recapped the board. Still work'n on the switches..These suckers will work better than new.Guaranteed!!!:thmbsp:

BE CAREFUL to not MIX up the switches!!!

I pull them one at a time, because there are two or three types of internal sliding contacts (two fingers, three fingers, four fingers) used that I have not taken the time to sit down and figure out as to whether or not they are "make before break" implementation, or whatever variant the different physical appearance confers.

One of those "mental notes" of mine is to someday do two of the different contact set units side by side to figure it out.

I find it hard NOT to do those switches when doing just a repair. I also do the side by side interlinked push button switches too, but that excludes the ones with the staked on tops - although I'm "thinking" on those...

edit - the picture scales on the contacts in the first one are mixed, they are a lot closer in length than that picture reveals - the pin to pin spacing on their switches are identical.

Its the only sure bet to get them clean.Just for the record..The switches I have pulled in the photo are all labeled with a marker on the backside S1 ,S2..yada,yada..They also only come apart one way and go back together one way. Pretty hard to mix them up.Unless you have problems counting to 4,,,

MAN!!!

I'm so excited, I can't stand it!!!

This is going to be great . . . . getting this SX-1280 back all reconditioned and ready for another 30 years. I still cannot believe my good fortune which led me to accidentially stumble upon this wonderful website.

There's not much I can say except: Thank you avionic!!!

I would be too. My 1980 is still on the list and I'm hoping to hear from Mark soon! Not to rush anybody else's work though, I'm pretty patient until I'm in your shoes.
