JBL l-100 vs. Klipsch Hersy II

Hmmmmm... a JBL vs. Klipsch question... I have no real opinion so I'll put on my PPE and stand back 12 feet.

Why not a pair of each! If you have a chance to score the Klipsch then do it, compare, then sell off the pair you don't want.

I can't comment because I haven't listened to JBL's in decades. I love my Klipsch though! :D
In all honesty though it's a tough question. JBL's for rock, but Heresys for Jazz. Buy both !!!!

If that's your only choice for Klipsch then I would probably take the JBL as it would be a better all around speaker. If you had said something like Cornwalls then it would be no contest.

I have been told that I listen to the most diverse selection of music. From classic rock, blues, jazz, reggae, new wave, classical, soul, country...

My L100's are the ONLY speakers to date that continue to put a smile on my face and my ears...

I had the L-100's for a couple weeks and sold them. They nearly ripped the ears off my head. I love loud music, but the L-100's emphasize a certain high frequency range too much for my taste.

Forward MIDS, actually, with rolled-off highs....

I know I'd not own the pair I have if I hadn't installed crossovers that helped balance out this speaker. They were not terribly impressive as they were.

I wish I'd waited for some 4412s, however.

I was not impressed with my L-100 until i tried different amps, sure makes them sound one way or another. They seem to like my SX1010. Rock they will. The SX1010 has always seemed warm to me so maybe it takes the edge off? My Sansui A100 tube amp drove the L100's fine but would slice your head off on some material. Point is the amp seems to have a lot of influence on the overall sound of the L100.

I have not heard good about L-100
i thought Cornwall was the main competitor by klipsch for L-100? not heresy...

I absolutely love my Klipsch's but they are LaScala's not Heresy's which I have never heard, they sure don't seem to get the same love though. I have not heard the L-100 or any other JBL for that matter but I would love to.

Yeah in my experience the L100s can be edgy.

For high end detail and transient response, it's no contest. The Heresy's. Like the man said, for jazz they ain't bad. On cymbals and brushed snares, they sound great. I have a pair and Chet Baker sounds real good.

For the varied music styles of music you said you liked, here's the general speaker progression from entry level to ultimate:
JBL L100
Klipsch Cornwall
Altec Model 19

Don't be afraid of EQ's either. I know they get poo-poo'd a lot here, but they do serve a purpose if used properly. Most people make all the sliders into a 'smile' shape, but that's not really how they were intended to be used. If you don't have a spectrum anayzer on the EQ, here's what I did for my L100's. I pulled 7600hz down about 6dbs on my L100's. Made them less 'forward' sounding. If you get too much boom from room placement, cut the 64hz also. Using an EQ to 'cut' is a generally accepted method to correct things. When you 'boost', you change things. May sound like a matter of semantics, but it's all in how you view things.

And as always, your mileage may vary. I have a Marantz 250m powr amp, and that one works well with my JBL L100's and people say it is also a perfect match for the Klipsch Cornwalls. As others have mentioned time and time again in other posts, the entire chain really comes into play. And you can only figure that out by trial and error, and sometimes just getting lucky.

Okie dokie, let's take a step back, and take a deep breath (I've seen enough of these comparisons in the past).

If you like the sound of cone drivers, go with the JBL. :music:

If you like the sound of horn drivers, go with the Klipsch. :music:
