AR headshell search is frustrating

Zodia

Super Member
I have been looking for an original (or one that fits) headshell that fits the original Jelco tonearm on my AR turntable, but have not been successful in finding one, i have found similar ones, but they all have the flat part of the headshell plug on the top (for the holding screw on the the tonearm), and the original is on the left side.
Can anyone please tell me where in world can i find one, any help would be appreciated.
Maybe if i knew the tonearm model # it would make the search easier but i don't, here's a pic if it helps.

I truly know nothing about this type of arm/headshell combo...BUT it looks to me that you have a headshell on there:scratch2:. Guess I need to be enlightened about this. Thanks, Preston

The current headshell has a bad wire, and by what i can see, and everything i have tried can not fix the problem, and it is nearly impossible to remove the spring type connectors.
That is the reason why i need the headshell. I suppose i should have stated the reason why i need the HS.

I'm a bit confused. If it's a headshell wire problem, then a set of new headshell wires should fix it.

If it's the headsell (unlikely), then any Jelco or Sumiko headshell should work.

If it's the arm to headshell collet pins, one may be stuck, and need "massaging" or cleaning to free the full springiness and extension of the pin- granted nothing is broken.

If it's a tonearm wire issue, a rewire of the tone arm is in order.

If it's RCA cables/ jacks, somewhat common, then they need to be replaced.

If it's the cartridge, the cartridge will need to be replaced.

Describe in length and detail the symptoms, problems, when it happens, what happens, etc.

Need more info here.

Thanks,

Paul

Wait- is this a fixed headshell? Looks like a straight arm too- I can't quite tell.

Do you want me to take a look at it closely?

If you feel like a drive, I'm about 35-40 minutes outside of the city nowadays.

It is a straight arm, and the headshell is removable, the holding screw in on the left side if the tonearm,so you can't see it on the pic, what happens is simply this, i once in awhile will loose the right channel, and for the first few time this would happen, all i had to do was to pull the headshell out ot the tone arm, and presto, all fixed, however, that doesn't seem to work anymore, today i have been fiddling around with it some more, and what i may have is a bad M97Xe, and I am quite furious right now, the cart is no more than two months old (if).
I played a record last night no problems, this morning right channel was gone again, so i proceeded to do my routine, yank headshell, move wires, pull on the pins with the aid of tweezers, and nothing not even a humm from the right channel when i touched the wires with a paperclip, but, when the red wired was out of the cart it would hum loudly, so i tested further, re-plugged the red and pulled the green still nothing, now, if i force the cart prong, BAM we get noise... either way i swapped channels, right to left left to right, and so far nothing i already played 6 albums and all is well. could it be the right ground wire on the headshell, or the cart itself? I am completely confused.
thedelihaus, thanks for the offer.

Any straight arm head shell will work.

nononono....:nono:

it's supposed to be such, but not exactly... like he tells... THIS is CEC-Style, screw on Headshell, but on top... not aside as the one he is searching.

It is NOT SME-Style and not the kind with screw at arm side like those on pic 3. This is already three types he cannot use but are for straight arm.

where's the screw? thats opposite of what he needs. the one he needs has the pins in the shell like on my pic one to see. but the screw on a side, so that the flat part on the armside must be aside too.

On this pic all three on top seem like likely candidate, but the Flat surface need to be on the left side.
Hmmmmm, i wonder it i can file it down without messing the HS.

What is the make of the middle one on top? That is a very close match to the original.

nooooo, not... you need the screw at the headshell if I've understood you correct.
can't you upload a sharp pic of the headshell connect of yours?

ok, misunderstood. Screw is on the armside. then I have none in my box i guess...

Zodia- if you want to come by for a visit, I have spare headshell wires (free for you) we can try.

I can also clean the pins for you.

We can hopefully troubleshoot by process of elimination.

Otherwise, feel free to stop by Audio Lab to pick up headshell wires to try.

I can't tell, but suspect that the tone arm wires are replaceable on this headshell- they usually are, on all but perhaps a few oddball designs.

I really don't think it's the headshell, but the wires. And if not the wires, the inner tone arm wires or tone arm pins. And if not that, the RCA Jacks.

Oh snap, are you the guy that sold me the Thorens belt back in April , at the garage in harvard square?
Do i just walk in there and yell out, "yo, itza me Zodia, wherez ma wirez" (with Mario's accent)? :D
Should i bring the headshell, with the cartridge? maybe you could also do me the favor of testing it, as i am getting different readings from both coils, sort of like a second opinion.

Not me- but Mike at Audio Lab is a swell guy. He can sell you headshell wires and I'm guessing that's your issue.

Follow this by giving the tone arm pins a small shot of DeOxit, and lightly work them with the end of a pencil- the eraser part.

If this doesn't work, the invitation is open if you want me to take a peek at your table.

But try those things first. I highly doubt anything is wrong with the headshell (though anything is possible).

Oh i already deoxit'ed the hell out of it, because that was my first thought, maybe the spring connectors were dirty on the head, also hit the tonearm pins, and it didn't help, did a continuity test on all the wires and they all check out, now here's another thing i found out just a while ago, with the cartridge on (when the right channel is out) and i check the load on the RCA plug's tips only, i get a reading (damn forgot what it was), now if the cartridge has two independent coils for the right and left channel there shouldn't be any load from the right and left rca center pin, right?
With the cartridge off, the display reads 0.000. Anyway i will stop by Wednesday morning.

I had the same problem searching for a headshell for my micro seiki MB-14 with a straight tonearm. But the tonearm came in three pieces, arm, connector and headshell. I carefully took apart the connector and turned it 90 degrees so it would fit a normal ADC hs.

Looking at yours, I don't see the connector piece. Perhaps, you can turn the entire tonearm?
