New to me Heresy

Picked up an older set, believe to be '74 vintage. Label says HD BR, which I think is Heresy Designer, birch. The grills are not removable, which I think is odd. I had two pairs of Heresy II and they both had grills held in by velcro. The grills on this are held in by a piece of wood trim. The previous owner also stained them dark walnut.
Can anyone tell me if the grill work is originally held in by the trim or if it was modified by the original owner.

The grills come off my set of Herey I's. Not sure of their date of manufacture but I think it was late 70's.
 
you shouldn't have grills on Decorators...someone may have made them and attached them...yours (I bet) are modified by a previous owner...Heresy Decorator Birch Raw...

I am going to take a closer look at the info stamped on the back. Maybe I am misreading the "D". The back does come off, screwed in now. From the pics I have seen, the the cab looks like the decorator series. Looking at the top, you can see the plywood laminate. This was not the case on my later ones. Which both had a finished look, no end grain showing.
If the grill was an add on, they did a nice job on it. Pie logo and all.
 
Heresy IIs had the nice mitered corners but the Heresys...at least in the Birch plywood had the butt joints where you could see the grain...

Labels on back say H D BR. Grills look fine, look like they were added, cloth is similar or match to other Klipsch. Big question is, remove stain, or leave them be? I need a project like a hole in the head.. or would that help?
 
For the moment, I'd leave them be and work on some interior upgrades, like replacing the caps in the xover, sealing the cabs, replace the gasket on the horns, rope caulking the squaker etc. Small inexpensive improvements which will make them sound a little better. Just my opinion.
 
All good ideas, but I think I will wait awhile. They do sound fine now to me, and I need to charge up the bank account before anything else gets done. Not to mention replace a furnace, paint the house, strip and seal the floors, paint the hall .....
 
listen to 'em as is for a bit at least...I listened to my low use Heresys for about 6 months and was so impressed with them over the kg2s they replaced...then I did the Bob Crites crossovers...the sound was slightly improved but I was happy to have a starting point and to know my Heresys sounded as intended when new...I hadn't replaced the horn gasket (small reddish rubber ring) because I didn't know Bob had those and didn't know enough to change them...mine are still fine but for the price, I'd change them too...you won't have any Titanium diaphragms to update to with the older K-77 tweeter but if you ever want to...Bob makes a tweeter that goes a bit higher...most like them but some do not...YMMV...enjoy your Heresys...
