BOC Speakers: Reproducers by Biggs of California model 14p bookshelf speakers.

Hey, anybody know anything about this pair a speakers? I can't find any info.

I just grabbed them from an estate with some old tube gear. A Bell Carillon 6060, an H.H. Scott 350 and a Fisher RT-70, and also a Garrard RC88/4 phono. All in all a real nice score. But I don't know any history on these speakers.

All I know is that BOC is long gone, and they made some clones of McIntosh amps.

I like the sound they produce. It seems very realistic. The high end is super crisp and clean, though I think the bass could have more punch. As a second pair in a system they'd be great bookshelf speakers.

Also, I'm having trouble getting power to the Bell 6060. Seems like the fuse is done, but I checked it with a meter, and it's good. Any ideas?

Any feedback would be welcome.
Thanks.

Bigg was a company that offered hi fi gear at lower prices than normal. The stuff worked well but was largely of inexpensive parts. John Gott was the engineer. This goes back about 50 or more years.

Do you get a resistance reading across the power plug on the Bell?

hmmm....

No ohm reading on the power plug. I guess that means the circuit is open. There should be some kind of reading, right?

That would probably mean something inside is unconnected or loose, right? Where do you think I should start? I'm pretty good at figuring stuff out, but very inexperienced with this sort of stuff.

Thanks for the info on the BOCs. They were kept so nicely, that I didn't realize they were so old. They sound brand new. For less expensive speakers, they held up really well.

that would be preamp not amplifiers.

thanks bob for that tidbit as i been trying to figure out why there was gott labeled gear and biggs of california? can you elaborate on this more as it would seem that if they were indeed the same company why relabel the gear?
oh and btw if you know where i can get a original copy of the g50 amplifier manual that uses 6sn7 and not the 12au7 that is in the sams i would appreciate it.

I don't know any more about the company than I posted. I suspect they relabeled the brand to reflect the reputation of the engineer, who may (or may not) have owned the company (or a portion thereof).

I have seen some schematics here and there in my web surfing but can't pin down just where. I'll think about it and do some Googling (which of course you also can do).

I do remember being shown the gear; they were sold out of their own stores, at least here in the San Fernando Valley. Pretty high pressure sales guys but they had a good pitch. Not good enough for me to buy, though.

I opened the bell carillon 6060, and the capacitor by the power cord is bad, visually.

I was hoping it was just the power plug...

I'm learning alot very quickly, but I am still intimidated by replacing all the paper capacitors in this, which I am told is the only way to go because they can be shot even if they look good.

I was directed to this page:

It's a little daunting, and I don't want to destroy this thing. Not sure what I want to do.
