Mirage - What Do You Think My Chances Are!

..... of finding a replacement woofer.

I picked up a pair of Mirage 450 speakers today. Price was right ... free! However, seller stated one woofer was "blown" (he discarded it last week). He knew enough that the 2nd woofer just needed new foam .... so I suspect the woofer was toasted. Regardless, he says the tweeters work (haven't pulled them yet to check), and the remaining woofer is labelled PL6K4 and 4DR51410. I suspect these are Peerless, as were the woofers in the SM-1's I had previously. I did hope that they were the real wood veneer model, but these are black ash vinyl covered.

So, can anyone help confirm the speaker make? .... anyone have any spec sheets on them? Maybe I can track down a pair of suitable replacements? Other suggestions?

I've got a soft spot for Canadian speakers .... and regret selling the SM-1's. Would be nice to get these working again.

If the cone is textured it would be an API woofer pretty much identical to my Energy ESM 3 woofer, aside from your solid dustcap opposed to mine being cloth weave.
Even my code PL5G2 is close.

Don't know if these would have been Peerless sourced though.

Well certainly an API speaker, but I don't think the cone is textured. Very smooth. Near identical to the ones in my previous pair of Mirage SM-1's which were clearly marked "Peerless" on the basket ... see attached.

I fired off an email to Mirage - don't expect any informative response, based on other's experiences, but we shall see.

I suppose I could cobble-up a rig to measure the T-S parameters ... but I would have to acquire most of that rig.

I got my replacment drivers for my 450's from eBay. Seller had a bunch of Mirage drivers, about 2 years ago. I have seen them come up, occasionally, since then.

Patience, my good man.
 
If you haven't already, try posting a WTB ad on Canuck Audio Mart. There was a chap there who was selling off quite an extensive collection of older API drivers. He had worked for API for many years, and I think he said that he started with Mirage pre-API. This was a couple of years ago, he was selling due to an impeding move and because of Klipsch re-structuring (read cutting) API R&D...
 
Just wanted to let you all know that I have passed along the karma (in the form of the Mirages ... free of course) to a local fellow with an ad up on CL looking for old Mirage, Energy, etc. speakers.
