Caps needed for a SG 9800 EQ.

This thread will be incomplete until later when I return home because I dont have the exact values of the caps in front of me -- left list home. But here's the question: the EQ has about 14 or 16 'lytic caps and approx 6 are the small orange, low value 'lytics. Even with a magnif. glass I can barely tell the brand but appears to be Nichicons. Anyway, do I recall correctly that these orange cans are special caps, low noise, ESR? If so, what would be reasonable replacements? Damn if I can recall the values - 1 uF 16volt maybe, if my memory serves.

........Recapping due to an unusually bulging/leaking cap in the power brd, one of the 1000uF pair, all others looks ok but while I'm in there......

I've never seen a SM on this EQ anywhere so I'm going by what caps are already there.

The service manual is in the AK Digital Docs section and it contains the schematic but it isn't very high resolution...

I have a PCB from a parted out SG-9800. Let me know if you need any of those fragile clear plastic caps or any other PCB parts. I may also have a couple of the slider pots.

Wow! Thanks! I was wondering about those plastic caps - leaving them alone for now but man they are fragile looking and tilt with a minimum of pressure.

I got an SG-9800 free off of CL. It does not light up, and does not work. The unit is in great condition except the 6 db attenuator button doesn't work. I snapped a couple of pics while I was under the hood. It might help your thread.

Thanks MTF for the cap list -- a question: For the low noise/leakage "ceanl" caps (6) what other brand/series cap would qualify there in the "UKL" catagory. Reason I ask is I think I have some Elnas and maybe Black Gates or Rubycons (dont know yet what
series "till i hunt for them) that I could use. Curious, dont have any but do any of the Panasonic series caps fit the bill as low noise/leakage? Thanks!
 
You will need to look up the published specs on the caps that you wish to substitute.

UPW's are 0.03CV or 4uA (whichever is greater)
UKL's are 0.002CV or 0.2uA (whichever is greater)

pioneer specified:
CEx 0.03CV
CExNL 0.003CV
CSS 0.003CV
CSZ 0.002CV

Some of those caps and their reputations don't add up to me. My personal impression.
 
Thanks all for the offerring of the parts. I think I'm good so far. Went thru my small cap inventory and came up with a few 1000uF 35v caps but not UPW. They are actually Nichicon UFG IIRC. would these work. .....

Another general question: Can a UKL low leakage cap be used in another signal path application say that called for a UPW or UFG, UKZ Nichicon??
 
second answer first. ukl's can be used where upw's were specified. May not make a measurable difference due to the nature of that circuit.

as for UFG caps, they are 85 degree C parts, have a leakage spec of 0.01CV or 3uA and Nichicon has this progression for their "audio" caps:
FW gold sleeve black lettering
FG gold sleeve black lettering
KZ gold lettering black sleeve

as to WHY Nichicon thinks they are better audio caps, the spec sheets are very cryptic, offering little proof.

an example I was able to dig out about elna silmics was that cap has silk fibers for "more consistent separator" and supposedly reduced microphonics...

you have ventured into a realm that I distrust, because of the refusal to say exactly WHY they are better. my PERSONAL UNSHAKABLE opinion is that there is more "marketing" involved than science, and is ALL I have to (and will waste my time on) say on the subject. That is not to say there may not be science involved, I am just highly suspicious of the ratio of science to marketing.
