Or, at least for now it appears that way...:D

Just brought these home last night; all drivers are working however one compression driver needs a new diaphragm.

The cabinets are Oak and are a little rough. I will most likely need to sand them down and refinish as I think they are past the "Restor-a-Finish" stage.

I will get some pictures and more details

A GIANT CONGRTS for you Anthony!!! Welsome to the 19-er club!.

Might I suggest rebuilding your networks up to the Z19 modifications recently posted. I rebuilt mine and they sound very good and took power much better as well! I also put my cabs on carpet tollers and put in 5 way binding posts- also put in a split terminal posts for biamping!!

Have fun- bet you are gonna love them!!

Nice score! They look quite restorable. Those compression drivers look familiar, are they 802-8Gs? I have a pair of those waiting for an Altec 511B horn and AE Lambda TD15 woof.
 
They aren't pristine and you do need a new diaphragm,but they are 19s and they are all yours! :D :thmbsp:

I always get the feeling upon looking at the top section of the 19 cabinet,that they were meant to have the 511 horn,but the final decision went to the 811.Probably a crossover point issue associated with the 1.2Khz XO in the 19.Who needs the 511 at 1.2K? :sigh:
 
Nice pickup.They look in pretty decent shape.I have never heard Altecs but I am pretty sure I would like them.Were there grills with them?
 
If you don't already own one buy a copy of The Furniture Doctor by George Grotz. He has some of the best suggestions, step by step instructions for refinishing veneer and solid wood.

Looks like you scored a pair with 802 8G? That looks like an 800 series body from the pic, and I definitly see a tangerine phase plug... ( 808 8B and 802 8G were the only 800 series to use that phase plug ) Woofs 416 8C?

Arent you building an F-5 amp? If so, this is a hell of a good reason to get that bad boy done, the F-5 should drive them like a party animal!

You might be as surprised as i was to learn that there was a tangerine equipped 806 variant that can be found in approx circa '75 thru '77 factory monitor cabinets. It was never a cataloged item, nor did it receive an 80X model number, just an 03xxxx part number. I promise they do indeed exist, there's a member at the Altec board with them OEM'd in 9849 monitors, and a few of us have also spotted them on ebay from time to time. They're uncommon, but they're out there. It wouldn't surprise me to hear of a few being found in late 846B/U's, but i have yet to see that.

Thats exactly what I was going to mate the Altecs with was the pending B1/F5 combo that I have been neglecting in my garage.

On the speaker horns it says 802-8b, so I am assuming thats what I've got. Only bad thing is the one disassembled driver that you see showing the tangerine phase plug appears to be missing sme screws to put it back together. I hope that wont be a big deal. I am planning on shipping both drivers to Great Plains Audio so that the one diaphragm can be replaced and the other driver can be looked over.

Once I get a few projects out of the way (Ar-4x, Ar-3a, F5, B1) I am going to get started on refinishing these cabinets. The only problem is the large gashes across the tops of both speakers. The front, rear and sides are all in ok shape but it will be hard to cover up those gashes and busted front corners. :tears:
 
As for the gashes across the top, try to sand them out as best as possible. Altec used fairly thick veneer. If you burn through then look at getting a couple sheets of Oak venner and just recover them. It is a large flat surface and should not be that big a deal.
As for the fronts- get the foam inserts from the Durst people- they work magic for difraction of the horns!

You might want to e-mail before shipping the drivers to GPA, the blown diaphragm might be repairable, FWIW from experience, I wouldn't ship the diaphragms to GPA when getting them replaced, retain them at home. I've seen many working phragms get damaged during the return trip, it's possible you have the rare 23744 "lite" phragms, try saving them. It's OK to ship the drivers without the phragms, get them recharged and new diaphragms, it will set you back a couple C notes but they'll be like new. Regarding the screws, be careful not to use anything longer than neccessary to hold the diaphragm down, I buy 1" stainless steel 6-32's and trim them to about 5/8" with wire cutters. Too long of screws will damage the plate under the diaphragm mounting plane, it's internal and can't be seen. Nice score!! Dave.

Yes. never came across that. Not to surprising, seems Altec used what was on the shelf and things varied. Interesting, these old Altecs.

Yes the 806-8A is the only 806 I've seen with the tangerine and also came with the 23744 diaphragm incidentally so if you find a 806-8A with a tangerine and it is still all original it should have the "Lite" Fram in it.:yes:

Nice Score !!! They look like mine, I really like the oak veneer, my cabs have a lot of like Birdseye's/tiger figures in the veneer.And look great I have no doubt that you will bring those back to beautiful condition.

One other thing.I too would try to change the caps,resistors,ground bypass,clean the pots, on your crossover first before an all out replacement.If you do plan on full replacement I highly recommend you keep the old Altec Iron Core Inductors (Coils) They very rarely go bad.A lot of folks feel that when removed from the 19 (Iron Core Inductors) it removed that Classic Altec sound,so back in they went. Here's a picture of my Crossovers that have made a huge difference with mine in sound quality.I also have the Paul Darst foams installed.

Those were my first choice in speakers back in the 70's when I entered into this endeavor, but still have not come across a pair locally. Nice score and enjoy.

Those crossovers are actually 1 of 2 donor pairs I bought of eBay with my originals packed away for safe keeping.

Yes all the mods done to perfection.Every chance I get I have to say Thanks Again Dave for making me one happy camper.

I can tell you after these crossover mods were done the sound was night and day difference. Stunning ! So if you've never heard a Model 19 with these Mods done, you owe yourself a listen.It's the Ultimate 2-way :rockon:
