Yeah, they beefed up the 2500 in response to Pioneer besting the 2500 with their SX-1980, and then the bottom fell out after the Technics SA-1000 when they all decided "enough is enough", thus the battle had ended.
I can't remember where I saw the production stats, but the 2600 saw less than 1000 units while the 2500 reached nearly 3000 units, IIRC. Anyone remember where those are posted at?

AHA! Thanks Chris! My bad. So the 2500 saw 1659 units while the 2600 saw 951 units, so almost double the amount of 2500's versus 2600's. I wonder how many are left in operational condition today.
Wow, so as it appears, a little stray off OP, if I may be allowed
, the rarest receiver is the 2330BD with a measley 184 units. 
The 2230 it seems is the winner of the most made is a whopping 185,266 units.

Actually, it was the other way around according to a former salesman and also my tech who had a chance to buy a pallet of broken 2600's from the factory.
Story was from the national Marantz Service Mananger who use to run a big Marantz scat site. Said many 2500's were actually upgraded with 2600 transformers when they failed. Not to say that the 2600 didn't have failures also..
