Searching for Watkins Surrounds?

The clear poly Watkins woofers seem to have been designed with a larger 10" cone than the earlier paper Watkins. I've had no problem locating surrounds for the paper coned drivers in the past.
The only surrounds I've been able to locate have inner dimensions of only 9", too small because if they were installed they would have to be glued a good 1/4" past the flat cone flange and onto the angled part of the cone. The roll of the foam would be above the cone itself and maybe subject to unwanted vibrations.
With a 10" cone I need a surround with at least a 9 1/2" inner dimension opening:sigh:

All the surrounds I've used were standard 12" from Matelectronic's.com I've lost count how many Watkins I've refoamed :scratch2: more than a dozen me thinks.
I've made all sorts of surrounds "fit" what ever driver I'd happen to be refoaming, by necessity, but...
A surround that has an inner diameter of 9" , with an angled flange, is not what I'd deem an appropriate surround for a cone that is basically 10"(9 7/8") with a 3/8th"+ flat flange(902-1180)
I don't believe I've ever used a surround that goes 1/2" beyond the cones outer edge:scratch2:
I guess I'll make do with whats out there as funky as it seems to me:yes:
Actually. No it wasn't.
I'm beginning to believe, now that it's sinking in, the drivers are "after-market" Infinitys(Japanese) and the cones are larger than the original paper coned Watkins thus making for less than a perfect surround fit than what I was used to with the original paper-coned drivers.

The reason for my concern was that, in the past when refoaming a driver, from my experience the beginning of the foam "roll" starts where the edge of the cone ends.
In the case of using a surround with a 9" inner dimension on this particular driver, there's a 3/8ths" of cone beneath the roll , creating what seems to be a "cavity" beneath the roll. Never really seen that before

Yes my friend but this underhang is so pronounced I was kinda not only concerned about actually gluieng up the flat surround flange but mostly concerned about possible vibration from the cone edge coming in contact with the foam roll at high volume excursion:sigh:

Only one way to find out for sure!
When removing the old surround it was easily apparent that the gooey brown glue was employed to secure the foam:sigh:
It's PITA to remove every trace of this brown crap. From your's( or anybody else's) experience can I use the white polymer glue or do I have use the brown do-do???

I used the white stuff that came with Rick's kit and it works fine. Seems alot like Aileene's tacky glue. Anyway, my watkins have been pumping nicely for months now.
BTW Tubed, I believe I've got the same imported watkins you have, could've easily used a flat flanged surround with a 9.5" inner diameter. I detailed them in the white paper sticky thread....

If you can find goof off glue and paint remover it works pretty well at cleaning up the poly cones, if not try Goo Gone Extreme. You need to scrape off as much of the old glue before using either.
As for glue I've used Weldbond for all surrounds and it works fine and is found at most hardware stores or online.
I havent gotten around to refoaming the clear poly Watkins but I just finished reading the White Paper sticky:thmbsp:
I installed a pair of spare paper coned Watkins that definately have a smaller magnet structure and smaller 1 1/2" VC.......a couple years back back I called Bill W., and although he seemed rather hesitant to talk about the imported woofers, he claimed they should "work" the same as the earlier iterations:yes::scratch2:.

By the angle of that photo I was trying to depict the size of the voice coil.
