Hey, I just won a pair of CS-88 speakers for about the price of two McDonald's value meals. Sadly one of them is missing a grill. Other than that, the pictures indicated decent condition, and they allegedly work. I assume I did fairly well, though I recall the CS-88A would be more desirable. I really wish I had the second grill, since I think the wife would approve of them being in the house.

Any thoughts?

I've got a set of these. They are in excellent condition with only a few marks on the bottoms. But, I don't care much for the sound these produce. They are very bass shy. I really wanted to like them, but just has not happened. They are great to look at though and my girlfriend likes the look too.

One last thing...

Are the grills from the CS-88s and CS-88As the same? I need a grill for one of them.

I think the CS88a had velcro grills whereas the CS88 have screw on grills. So you might have to drill some holes if the dimensions match up;)

I took a rough measurement, and they are about 12.5"W by 23.25"H. I don't have the depth because I did not have the time/desire to take the one grill off.

The 88a's are a little bigger - 12 7/8" X 23 7/8"

However my 77a's seem pretty close - 12 3/4" X 23 1/4 "

Double check your width - maybe the 77a's will work for you. I see them pop up on fleabay from time to time.
 
Just for the heck of it I checked the grills on my Nova 8's. They are: 23.5 X 12.5.

Very similar grills except for the built-in "RS" symbol on the bottom.

I finally had a chance to measure the one grill I do have. I'm getting 12-3/4" x 23-5/16" x 1-9/16". It seems like the grills are all basically the same size (IMHO, 1/8" or less is negligible for most things). The problem is I don't want to get caught buying a grill that won't fit. Maybe I should just bide my time and wait for a grill specifically from a CS-88.
 
Impressive...

I took a few minutes to hook them up to a Sansui 4000 out in the garage. I noticed that the tone knobs/connections are scratchy. I was getting intermittent full response. However, once I worked them a bit and turned up the volume, I was pretty impressed. I'm not sure what was meant by 'bass shy' but I felt it was pretty decent. I mean, it's not as loud as I can make my car, but I'm also 35 now, not 19.

Once I figure out how to tear these open (I'm guessing the screws on the back), they're going to get a cleaning, fresh coat of paint on the front, and RAF/Feed N Wax on the cabinets. I just need to find that damn grill cover...
 
mine also benefited from a good cleaning of the adjustmetn pots on back. i just ran some rubbing alchol over the contact surface cleard them right up
 
anyone else running the cs-88a with the tweeter surround gone. mine was deteriated so i took it all off and got all the material off the cone. i just been using it without the surround since its closed back and it seems to be working pretty good. ive had them higher then 20 watts and didnt seem like the tweets moved enough to even wory about the surround.
