What do you think of this listing? I believe these were only sold in pairs WITH the preamp. Price was around $15K.

The fact that there is a sticker with the serial number seems very strange. Looks a little fake also. Does McIntosh really use stickers? I emailed him and all I got were terse all-caps replies. I asked about the other pieces and the reply was "ALL I HAVE IS WHAT YOU SEE" period, end of email. I sent another email asking for any background on why there was only a single and how it came to be that way, no reply.

I would think if this was a fraudulent listing, the guy would have listed the whole set or at least a PAIR of amps.

I have a gut feeling this might not be a fraudulent listing, but may be a single stolen amp. I looked up Hometown Illinois and it is right next to Midway in Chicago, maybe not really a hotbed of audiophilism.

I'd report it to ebay, but I don't really haven any facts to back up my gut.

The photography is very good, the listing is polished and very brief. Just doesn't add up as a zero-feedback seller. The price is also too low for something a year old that originally sold for 15k.

If it is real, I'd be afraid it would be improperly shipped. Perhaps if it was a "local pickup" opportunity?
 
Since so few were sold, I wonder if the factory can shed any light on the unit's provenance? If, indeed, the unit has been stolen, a simple phone call could alert the rightful owner.

Excellent advice. Not only can they tell you about the amp, they can also tell you if that serial number even actually exists.

Brand new seller joined eBay two weeks ago. No location listed. Send him a message and just ask for some details on the amp's background. See what he says.

It looks like the serial number has been photoshopped. Did they really use stickers?? I saw one listed on Agon and the serial number for that one had one more digit, no picture though

This may just be another faked listing but something seems a little different about it.

Hometown Illinois is actually right next to midway airport in Chicago. I asked him if I could pick it up and his reply was "YES IF YOU WIN THE BID. THANKS
".

Once I asked about the background and why there was only a single he stopped replying.

I'll email it to McIntosh in the morning. They should know if there are any reported stolen items.
 
Maybe it was stolen from mister T :D Way to flashy for me...If you ask me its probably a Chinese copy. As said Mcintosh should know if it is real, since so few were produced.
 
I saw one of those in an audio store that they used to demo speakers. This particular one had a gold plated badge with the serial number and the buyer's name on it. Fishy

Thats interesting, I guess who ever went to the estate sale first only had enough cash for one :scratch2: only conclusion I can draw.

I'm guessing that is the same seller under a different name. He finally emailed me back. He said the guy that sold it to him only had one. But, the listing you reference is in Oak Lawn. That is where he told me this one is located.

If those stickers with the serial numbers are for real, then it may be a non-issue. If they are faked, I'd guess them to be 'hot'.
I have no idea why he would sell them separately under two different names. Now it seems very fishy.

I called McIntosh. I told the operator the situation and she sent me to what she thought the appropriate department would be. I left a voice mail. No reply yet. If they don't care, I don't care. But I am curious.
