A Real nice guy.....and a AR XA Turntable

A couple of weeks ago I got an email from a guy and asked if I was interested in a AR XA Turntable.

Yes, I replied!:yes:

He said he was visiting his folks in New York, (he's from California) for the holidays and they had a AR XA turntable they no longer use and were going to trash it. He did a quick Google search to see if there was a market for them. The first thing he saw (lucky for me) was my XA restoration page.

That's when he emailed me and ask if I wanted it.

The problem was I lived in the Boston area and he was in New York.
He replied he was going to visit some other friends just outside of the Boston area later that week and would be happy to meet me some where to give it to me.

Well this afternoon I met him and sure enough he gave me the turntable for......... FREE!!! What a nice guy! :yes: Thank you again Eric!

It's in pretty good shape but I'm sure when I get the time I'm going to rebuild from top to bottom like my other one.

So far 2011 has been a very good year for me!:banana:

I'll keep everyone posted when I start the rehab.

Wow, dustcover, headshell and a logo badge. Nice.

That looks like a solid walnut base, is it a one or two motor?
 
Real considerate of him to go through that effort to put it in the hands of someone who has use for it.Thats cool!
 
I know this thread is almost two years old, but I had a lot of other projects to do first and I kind of forgot about the TT.

Anyway, so now two years later I finally got around to fixing her up.

It didn't need to much work as can be seen in the picture in first post.

I did the usual by adding the RCA jacks and power cord jack in the back.

Sanded down the base and re-stained it. Cleaned up the AR badge. Cleaned up the platter and a general overhaul.

Painted the plinth with Rust-Oleum Pearl Mist color. I like the light color this time. It has a little metallic look to it.

I wanted a foam mat like the original but as we all know they're almost all long gone...turned in a gooey messes. I found some 3/16" x 15 x 24 foam (actually it's for air conditioner filter) at Lowes and decided to make one. I think it's works pretty good.

I can tell you it sounds wonderful like my other XA's. One sweet TT!

that's really beautiful - lighter colour top-plate works well.

there is something about the XA for sure - just looks so 'right' in its minimalist way.
 
I actually dig the white color on this. Looks good.

The original pics with the fugly brown is what mine looked like when I got it. Every single one I've seen has looked pretty much like that before it got repainted, so I guess its just a "feature" of the paint. Mine remains brown like the original, and since I did not sand the plate down its textured too.
