SA 9800. Finally got one

SA-9800. Finally got one (Dec 8, 2011 Work Finally Began)

Finally. After 2 years of searching, I found I nice clean SA 9800. It powers on, but has no sound. Looking forward to making her sing again.

Without power on, inspect the amplifier boards for TO-92 transistors with a visibly thicker center collector lead, then check it's solder joints. Then look for burned or even slightly off color resistors. Reference back to the schematic for any resistor marked with a triangle to check for signs of heat.

They are probably 2sa912's and 2sc1885's.

A tipoff, a red red brown 220 ohm resistor where the center red looks more like the brown than the red.

You'll probably end up changing 4 TO-92 transistors in the amps over to TO-126 transistors for the heat dissipation capability.

The 2sa726's should come out too, to ksa992's.

No. It does not... and I know that is a definite issue. And yes... I also know pictures are an AK'rs best friend. I will try and get a few soon. It has been a VERY busy weekend due to the NAMM trade show in Anaheim. Thanks for the sm link.

Thanks Mark for the initial insight. I have yet to get a chance to really look at it. I did however take the top and bottom covers off and give it a pretty good look. It is definitely bone stock, even all of the output transistors and wire ties are original. The boards are in great shape with just a little darkness around those heat sinked transistors. It had a moderate layer of undisturbed dust inside of it in all areas that you would expect, which was a great thing to see.

The pre-amp/amp jumpers are there.

I will give it a better look eventually, once things settle down here.

I recently got some 1/8" stainless rod, to bend into "U" jumpers. Interested?

OK. Was able to snap a couple of photos. Thanks Mark, but I have the jumper bars in place on this one. Not cleaned up at all, but I dusted off a little on the top surface, but have not done anything else other than look. The finger marks in the dust on the bottom cover are mine, in happiness that it had not been removed previously.

Haste Makes Waste...

I was so absolutely busy and overwhelmed this weekend that my initial half-a%&ed assessment was dead wrong. Once I got to really check out the 9800 a few minutes ago, it is FULLY FUNCTIONAL! The Protection Relay clicks in, and every function, pot and switch on it works as advertised. A touch of static when turning a couple of the pots, like the balance, but it is fully operational. And it sounds absolutely beautiful. (I rarely use the word beautiful, but it is the right word here)

Good to start with a functioning amp and recap it and change out some select components than to try and fix this beast in addition to replace parts. I am VERY happy about this discovery.

Not quite sure when I will take on the task, but now that I know what the task is, it makes it more painless and enjoyable.

Here's a pic (sorry it's upside down, but you get the idea) of those fluorescent meters at work...

I have never heard this particular amp but I will say these amps,especially in wood are perhaps the most beautiful int amps ever made.Enjoy as you have one fine piece of equipment.

Glad you have it up and running. The 9800 is very soothing. I am experimenting with the 9800, Pioneer A-90 and Pioneer A-80. I am listening to each about three months to determine which one I like. Started with the A-80 and I am on the A-90 now.

I will have to scour AK to find the cap list(s) and other tidbits on what I should replace on it. I have some ideas after doing the SX-3900 (being a non-switching amp design as well) on some additional components that I might want to replace (trim pots, resistors, transistors and such), but I will reach out to the pros on AK here to see if I'm in the ballpark or not. Any advice is gladly accepted and highly appreciated...
 
That is fine looking amp, and I'll second the notion this line of Pioneer is the best looking ever. I don't have a 9800, but a SA-8800 is my daily driver, and I think the SQ on it is better than my other amps or vintage Pioneer receivers (SX-1050, 980, Yammy CA-810, to name a few). The only nit on these is the faux wood case, which I haven't taken the time (or learned how) to make a decent replacement for yet.

The old list in your thread has been updated a bit since you used it, post the list here with all the (my) unordered bupkus edited out so only the parts to be ordered are present, and I'll double check against the 3900's I just finished doing.

I DID drill a few holes for neater installation of the presently available idle current trimpots.

BTW, ever do the UKL's on the 9100, and does the noise still exist?

Yeah. I just figured that the 9800 is quite similar to the 3900... and based off your response I guess I am good in that assumption. I will look at that thread and see what it says. I know there were updates to the list on the fly as we worked on it.

I didn't really have any issue with those idle current trim pots, just dog-legged the pins a bit and good to go. I guess I could dremel some holes in the pcb if need be. Your key words may be "presently available"... indicating holes may be required.

And no... unfortunately I have not been able to do a thing on the 9100(s) on the bench. Although I will. I recently broke a finger (about a month ago now) and that has taken me completely out of the drumming realm for a bit, so I 'might' be able to find a bit of time to replace those caps in that 9100. I will try to set aside some time soon.

I hear you on the case not being the best feature of these machines. I am a definite lover of real wood, and hardwoods especially (exotic hardwoods if necessary, affordable, or obtainable). Back on Track with the 9800

I am back on the 9800. It is the only item on the bench right now with full focus. I have tested all functions, and they all work properly, with some clicking on switch throws and static on pot turns here and there.

I took the top and bottom covers and shield covers (x2) off and the faceplate and deoxited (D5) all switches and pots THOROUGHLY. Been just doing some general cleaning up of the unit. I will check the power supply board voltages to see where it stands tomorrow (I hope). And take a closer look at the caps and start comparing my actual 9800 to the current list(s).

Here we go...!

Hi, I would like to get the measurements and some photos of the inside of the case, so I can build one for my SA-9800.
