i have a pair of sony dr-4a...and while they are probably the coolest looking headphones i've ever owned...the sound is erm...let's say..distinctly ...lo-fi !
Yeah...these sound...uh..well...like a 30 cent TV speaker played through a can on the other side of the wall. They look nice though!
I know the post is a year old but I just picked up a pair of DR-5As from my fave junk shop (for a tad more than 66 cents mind you). They do sound pretty tinny alone but run them through an equalizer and they aren't bad. I set my EQ to a V shape and they sound 100% better. The sound is still not top of the line but you can listen to them without getting a headache after 5 min.
With that said however, I'll probably end up converting them to better sounding hardware. They do look pretty cool but looks alone don't make good headphones.
