Stupid newb question

I am clueless, in many ways....but can a person put an integrated vintage amp in the preouts on a receiver and not hose things up? :screwy:

Right, so the integrated amps and controls would be the only ones impacting the speakers vs. a power amp just providing power.

The packaging is your choice: you could go with a an all-in-one unit like the old Fisher in my parents livingroom: turntable, cassette deck and tuner built in; or you could go with all separates or anything in between.

A preamp can be as simple as a volume control, but most preamps include facilities for input selection, balance control, tone controls, tape loops and filters. Most vintage preamps also contain a phono preamp stage.

A power amp is simply that, most are not designed with any controls at all, although some have gain control(s) to level match the channels and to match the amp's input sensitivity to the preamp's output. Generally these are tiny knobs on the back of the unit and were not designed to be used as everyday volume control(s). The power amp section of your receiver is exactly the same as a separate power amp.

An integrated amp contains both a preamp and a power amp.

A receiver contains a tuner, a preamp and a power amp.

You can mix and match all day long. Any integrated amp or receiver with preamp outputs (PRE-OUT) and/or power amp inputs (MAIN-IN) allows you to use either the preamp, or the power amp, or both. Any preamp can drive any power amp (okay, there are some exceptions but generally this is true).

I assume you want to use the receiver as the preamp and the integrated amp as the power-amp, right? In that case (Turn everything OFF first - This might help you avoid newbie mistakes), run a pair of RCA-cables from the pre-outs (preamp-out) of your receiver to the main inputs of the integrated amp. What kind of integrated amp is it? This will help to understand what you've got to work with there. I would imagine your integrated has the ability to run the preamp and power-amp separately, which is what you want to do (You don't want to just go into your integrated amp's 'aux' input [auxilliary input], which is for running things like CD-players off of the amp, and NOT a preamp-input). Hopefully this helps.
 
Let us know what the models are. Your integrated amp may be better used alone anyway. If you are wanting to use the receiver as just a tuner or just a phono preamp, then you can/should use the tape out into the integrated instead. Actually you can/should use the tape out for almost all purposes I can imagine you have here.

I mainly want to add some juice to my Pio 1120k (I know, new=booo...lol) and I assume a straight power amp like an Acurus or something would be best.
I have Infinity RS3B's and have had thoughts on changing to Vandy 2's or 3's. Some of the vintage stuff from when I was younger is catching my eye.
 
I would recommend the Acurus A250, but only if you figure in on upgrading it.
I recently came across one-wondeful build, and classic circuit desing, but a bit flat sounding-not bright-but flat.
Looking at all the tought that went into this amp-contruction/layout etc, I figured ther had to be someone out there that had addressed the problems with this amps sound.
I did some checking and came across someone you offers a upgrade for this amp-along with other Acurus amps and preamps.
Among other things-he specifically deals with the two main problems why this amp sound flat.
First, poor quality power supply caps. Second, the input circuit is not designed right, and he adresses this, removes the input cap, cleans up the circuit, and installs JFETs, and does a dual mono conversion, and in place of the 2 large power supply caps, he installs 4 high quality ones.

If you buy right you can have a highy quality, beautifully designed amp, with lot's of reserve for those inefficient Infinities that should last for years without worry for a decent price.
The Acurus amplifier line has alot going for it-it just needs a little help.
The realitively small foot print is a bonus as well-it's heavy though!:thmbsp:
