Fisher Contemporary Console - R-20 Chassis

I just picked up this Fisher console. Looks like a Fisher Contemporary C-800 with a R-20 chassis. The dial glass says Metalist Series II. Turntable is RC-171 Mk II.

There are 3 speakers: 15" woofer, 8" midrange, and 4" tweeter.

The grille cloth has some problems in the lower right hand corner and there are scratches. I traded it for a Blaupunkt console (175 pounds) that I never liked. It was supposed to be working but seems to be dead. Hopefully nothing bad.

You have a great mono unit there with a beautiful cabinet. I have the same one under restoration here, also with a Medalist II R-20 transplanted into it (the C800 R-20 should have no lettering there).

The cartridge is from the very well-regarded GE VR series.
 
The console is working good now.

I didn't fully understand the function of the "Automatic Turn-Off" control. When it's in the "on" position, the console turns off when the turntable is in the off position. It's a safety feature to keep the unit from staying on all night.

It will still have to be recapped to achieve full fidelity.

That's one of the cool features of those old Fisher consoles, and the reason for the weird three-blade power plug for the TT. Basically, you can put your stack of records on, and when it's finished playing the last one the whole thing shuts down. Very clever.

My Clairtone console (Canadian brand) works this way too.
 
They continued that feature all the way thru into the SS units running receivers. It threw me too when I first got my 65 Electra.

That one's got the cool tuning eye . . . the one that captured a certain 11 year old's imagination . . . and still does.
