Pioneer sx 1250 plexi-glass front?

Yikes...not again!
Hello forum....just got a sx1250 with a busted glass panel......I remember reading somewhere here on the forum, that you can get durable plexi glass alternatives........who can help in this respect? Please PM me.......thanks.

OR do you just re-fabricate a panel in glass?:thmbsp:

In the US, it's a simple matter to give the needed dimensions to a glass cutter and have one made for less than $20.

Yep, had a new one cut and drilled for a SX-950, total cost was $25 USD. For that amount of money it was not worth my time to do it myself.

I use clear 2" packing tape to jigsaw puzzle back together the damaged one (on both sides for safety when finished) and get a glass shop to use that as a master for making a replacement.
 
I bought a huge 4ft X 4ft lexan sheet, had em cut it to 12.5 X 4.5 and am slapping it on my JVC. I never looked into glass I must say though.

I recently just replaced 2 glass panels in a couple of 1250's and had a glass shop make some new ones. $10 each.

The plexi-glass solution didn't sound good to me either............

When I have it made.....I'll post a couple of pictures..........before I start on the 1250, I need to finish up the kr9940........so, it may be a while....no worries......
 
Plexiglass (acrylic) is a bad idea because it is so soft and will scratch when you so much as look at it. Lexan (polycarbonate) is much better, as it is much harder. But there's nothing like real glass.
 
I used lexan on the JVC, and for all the 1000 scratches in it a few on the face would just add to its character.
I guess my 1250 should get real glass. Once I get it working I guess.

Does any of you know the thickness of the glass (mine has been completely removed).

Standard 3mm float plate should be just fine. I've used that in some other Pioneer units with good success.

If you have difficulty finding someone to bore the hole you can get a 16mm diamond bore for about $20. They are usually good for about 20-30 holes with proper cooling water use.

Using anything else than real glass for the purpose is risky at best. There are some materials out there that don't scratch but just as worse, they fog over or "opacify" in some manner. Since this is not a question of safety even the most sophisticated replacement should be a very last resort, as is so deplorably evidenced in the automotive industry.
