Dual 1229Q strobe lamp/neon

Does anyone know of a source for a neon lamp for the 1229Q, or, alternatively, a hackable substitute? I'm very comfortable with a soldering iron if that helps. I searched but didn't turn up anything obvious. Thanks in advance.

Before you give up on the existing bulb, try something that saves 3/4 of them. Using fine emery paper, gently sand the ends of the bulb [assuming that it is not cracked].
They are sometimes on ebay, sometimes in stock at www.turntableexperts.com, and might be available from All-In-One Electronics in Canada.
 
Thanks very much for the leads and advice... the reason I'm looking for a replacement is that on this particular turntable (which I bought today as a stand-in while I work on my also-new 1219) the lamp is missing completely, as in removed (!). I'm going to check with All-in-one in the morning since I'm in Canada, and if I don't get lucky, I'd love to get any info/specs on exactly what type of lamp was in there to begin with. The service manual doesn't say much of anything, but I'm thinking it can't be anything too extraordinary. If I can't figure out a suitable replacement, I'll just go old school with a strobe disc- it would just be nice to see this one work ;)

Member "Dualfred" on dual-board.de sells a LED replacement lamp on ebay. Use google translate to read this -

Dualfred's led replacement is simple - just a bright LED, with an anti-parallel 1N4148 and a 75V Zener in series to get sharp pulses.

Thanks very much for the great information. I don't know how I missed some of those- model-specific searches I guess. I think I'll try an NE-2 lamp first and give the Dualfred led replacement a try when I manage to track down a 75v zener in town here.

Just to follow up in case it might help someone else... I (not surprisingly) had trouble finding either a 75V zener or a NE-2 neon where I live, but I did find a neon panel lamp, which after 10 minutes of Dremel-ing coughed up a neon which ended up working just fine. It might not be as bright as the original, but I wouldn't know since I've never seen an original one working ;)
If anyone wants more detail on what I did, I'll be happy to share. For now, I just wanted to confirm that the standard-ish NE-2 type neon works in the 1229Q.

If you want the original lamp, I have them. To follow up on what Seth said - another trick is to simply turn them around in the socket.

There is a seller on ebay Germany who sells a very cool, plug-in L.E.D replacement for the neon tube. Even available in different colors.
I believe he is a personal friend of valued A.K. member 'Lini'.
 
I just looked up the part. You will easily find it on German ebay by using the three words 'Dual plattenspieler strobe'. The seller is quite trust worthy.
 
Seth: Well, I guess that would depend a bit on one's individual definition of "friend", and I'm not quite sure how Alfred would define that. Maybe he'd rather call me a "good aquaintance" or a "hifi buddy" or whatever. What I can definitely say, though, is that I like and highly respect him - and if I'm not mistaken, that's a mutual feeling.

Anyway, for those who don't like Ebay that much, Alfred's LED replacement lamps can also be found on his own site for Dual and Thorens replacement parts (Dualfred.de). Whereas info on his own direct drive and the turntable around it would be available on Langer-Audio.de - just a pity that it's not exactly cheap, for a large part due to being made over here in very small quantities...

P.S.: On a very off-topic sidenote, you probably also at least vaguely remember our conversation about NS Germany a while ago, do you? Iirc, I had told you in that, that my family had been pretty lucky to hardly be involved/affected at all. Turns out, that this wasn't quite the case - and I just hadn't been aware of that: Recently I asked my stepfather about his grandparents, and was very surprised to hear, that his dad's mum and dad had both been in a concentration camp due to political disagreement. Gladly enough they survived it, though. Nevertheless quite shocking - regime victims in my own family, and if I hadn't asked, I'd still have no clue...

I use Dualfreds replacement in orange both on my 1228 and on my 1229. The optical outcome is nearly indistinguishable from the original.

By the way, I think Alfreds website is also switchable to English.
