hows the yamaha R-9 receiver?

i have an opportunity as a trade for one of these and wonder how are they. it seems to be one of the first A/V receivers made going by it's date it was made in. supposedly it's a class A amp inside. i'm wondering how it sounds. i'm kinda edgy and consider disregarding cause it's an A/V receiver since most a/v receivers are more about inputs than sonic performance but i can be wrong about this one.

i'm wondering what's your thoughts?

It isn't really an AV receiver. It just has inputs for your video gear. 2 channel only, and most definitely an audio first unit. You won't be disappointed. It even has a MC/MM switch in the phono section. As for the Class A, it does help the sound, but it only runs under 35 watts and auto switches off when it goes over that IIRC, but it does have a switch to turn it off totally for when you are just rockin' it. You can get a lot of volume for your 35 watts before you don't get the Class A amplification though.

i see...i think your right. i use to own an 1980's RCA amp with video inputs but it was my aunts and once i got it working she wanted it back lol.

how does the R-9 sound to the older CR series? i was gonna try to hold out longer to see if i can get one of those for trade but from what you mention the R-9 sounds very temping now.
 
I have one and I really like it. Mine had a recent sudden death though and I'm still trying to find the time and of course the necessary knowledge (for which AK is a gold mine fortunately) to get it up and running again. I don't have recent experience with quality earlier Yamaha equipment to compare it too sonically.

As I've searched here and around the rest of the internet for solutions to my problem, I've found a lot of praise for the sound and features of the R-9 but several comments about solder and other build quality issues with the whole R series. Take a look here for some of that.

I got mine for free, and I'll eventually fix it so I can't complain. It was built in '84 or '85, so I'd say it did hold up pretty well, but if I had recently paid someone for it, I'd be disappointed. I'd say give it a listen and if you like it trade but give some thought to potential problems while you negotiate.

really? dang that sucks. was it tho more of user error? wondering cause i heard they only run hot under class A mode. maybe people leaving it on for very long periods in higher then room temperature was causing there issues maybe?

if i like the sound i'll trade. i already sent the person a reply saying i'm considering it. i don't mind fixing things and learning but if it's a consent issue i think i might just not.
 
well guy sent me pictures and told me he been driving 4ohm mirage 290 bookshelf speakers for the time he had it and it been working perfectly fine for him with no issues. he was honest and told me in detail about the tuner save station might need a new battery and he tried fixing the plastic door by gluing it and that the tone controls might need little cleaning cause he been using a separate EQ with it the whole time. other then that it looks nicely taken care of and if he been driving 4ohm load for long time so i think i be well ensure and be fine with it.

tone controls is easy fix if little scratchy and i probably won't bother with the tuner since i most likely hook it up to my sansui 5000x as well and use the tuner off of that. i replied and told him i might defiantly take him up on his offer since he seems the only one interested in the trade and asked for his number so i can give him a call since my cell is out of minutes.
 
That's great. I can't compare it to the CR series, as I've never heard any of those. However, it did stick around instead of a Pioneer SX 950, a Marantz 2325 and even took the place of my Denon PMA-920 for a while. I only got rid of it when a Kyocera 861 came into the picture and I just preferred the sound of it over the Yamaha. It isn't necessarily better, just my preference. It went to the home of a friend who now has and has had over the years some very good gear and he loves it. So it definitely is no slouch.

I hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
 
i purchased one for a family member and ran it for a while here first to try to get rid of the scratchiness in the pots. besides that, it had no issues whatsoever. it's pretty nice sounding, although the A-1 does clearly beat it. the remote capability is very convenient though!
 
One of the better Yamaha recvrs as far as sound quality goes.

I switch mine out of class A all of the time as it runs too hot and I only worry about class A with my SET tube amps where it really makes a difference.

Mine has the FM tuner prob also, I just spend a few minutes retuning when I need it since it is not my main system amp.

Very good unit though!

thanks for all the help. well the guy sent me another message saying if i don't like the yamaha i can trade back if i end up not liking it. he said he's just trying to find another amp to mate with his mirage speakers better. i told him i take him up on his offer. i'm gonna call him up later and ask when he wants to come over and give my amp a test run to make sure everything is working before i make the trade.
 
I bought an R9 new in '85 or '86. Never used the class A much, but I had 3 sets of speakers connected to it and running most of the time. I loved the sound as well as the convenience of the remote. And watching movies was awesome with the R9 providing the sound. Unfortunately I had to give that R9 up to the ex. Because I liked the R9 so much,I bought another one 8 years ago. I still love it. In fact I have 2 more R9's (one for parts) for backup. I am currently running it with a set of DCM TF-600's, and a Pioneer PL-530 TT and an Integra CD changer. The sound is very clean but not sterile. The tone controls and variable loudness knob help tweek your sound to go best with alot of speakers and room conditons and your own preferences. The tuner is super. It has so many great features. It is definately an "audio" receiver first, with inputs for video sound.
