UTAH Speakers (pics)

Well I found these utah wd 66 speakers today. They are absolutly immaculate. Not a scratch on them. They were enclosed in a console setup.
They appear to have a 12 inch woofer around 8 inch mid and 3 or 4 inch tweeter. Of course if anyone has more info I would love it.

I almost bought some Utah's last year. The cabs were really beat up and they were priced way too high. Do a search in the vintage forum at audioasylum.com. When I was researching Utah speakers I found a lot of info over there.
 
Utah made some pretty good speakers, although they weren't "audiophile approved" they were sometimes better than the audiophile brands like KLH and AR.

I had a pair of DIYs that used a 12" Utah coaxial with a horn tweeter, those were fine speakers.
 
All alnico magnets on those drivers, they should be very efficient. Less than one watt will be enough to get those plenty loud.

I had some 2 ways made by Frazier in the early 60s that used Utah drivers. They were great sounding speakers. I played them till the cones ripped.
 
Due to ongoing issues with my A-25's I decided to hook these up again in my den. I must say these are some very nice speakers. Super efficient, even with the amp volume all the way to the left they have audible music coming from them.

They definatly have a different sound than the A-25's. Bass is probably a little "stronger" on the dynaco's but I would not say it is better. The Utah's seem to lack a little detail, but they are still very enjoyable. The Utah's sound "seperated" to me at times. I don't know if there is a better term for that. Its like somtimes I can really tell what instrument is playing out of what speaker. The Dynaco's were more blended.
 
After adjusting the rheo on the back of the speakers they sound even better. They excel at jazz. Just so-so with heavy metal. Someone posted that the had a problem with the highs. I have seen no evidance of that. Just a little lacking on the bass "punch" and thats only noticable on certain songs.

Weird thing though, I feel like I am always turning the amp down. These are low volume speakers :dunno: :screwy:
 
You will find these are very eficient speakers. I found that against my Wharfedale Saphire SP89's the vol on a tube amp was down about 1/2 what the wharfes needed.
