Speakerlab SA500's???

IT'S ME, IT'S ME...IT'S..
I have not made it home yet so I cannot add a picture.
Just picked up a pretty nice looking pair of Speakerlabs SA500 speakers at Goodwill. What do you know about these?
They are about 4' tall wrapped in material. You hook up the wire from the bottom. Very heavy.

lots of foaming to do. Mid range, woofer and Passive all need re foaming,

A friend re-built a set of those. I think he had to change some drivers though (came home bad). Once up and running though, they are nice.
I've never met a set of Speakerlab that I didn't like.
 
I found a tiny set of speakerlabs out here in Atlantic Canada.... 1c's i think they were....i gave them to a fellow AK'er.

Solid speakers...

That is where the 12" passive goes, it is a small round fiber board that I have to attach with a new surrond.
I have never refoamed a 4" mid range before looks like it might be tricky.
 
I have refoamed one of those midranges before, I couldn't find a surround for it, and the original surround is flat foam, so I cut a new surround out of felt and glued it in place. The plus side is the felt only cost about $.30, the negative is that it took forever. Looks good though.
If you need any help with it let me know.
 
I can tell you that Sir. Byrd knows how to do a hand-cut felt surround very, very well! I have a pair of the SA-500s, although the original leaf tweeter was replaced with a nice Vifa dome prior to my purchase. In my humble opinion, these are very nice speakers when set up well. The Speakerlab flat face passive radiators were trashed when I got the speakers and I replaced them with new conventional ones from Part Express. Re-capped the crossovers, and have enjoyed these thoroughly for about two years.

They sound really good when played loudly, and I have to confess that I overdrove them with 255 wpc. I need to have one of the woofers rebuilt. But boy, does Pink Floyd's Pulse sound good on these things!
