Went to yard sales all morning. Very little of interest.
Probably 80 miles today, Hell and gone, almost home, oh, one more sign.

WAY back in the hills, (hear banjoes?)

Ratty, ratty, nasty, looks like all bad furniture and crudy trailors and trucks.

Notice lattace, speakers! Under the table. Actually THEY ARE THE TABLE.
Boards on top.
Ask about them.

Way cheap. Dirt cheap.

Dig them out.

KABUKI! 58 pounds EACH. Almost got killed in the car going down hill (they were in the back, had to put the top down to load them.

One loose terminal, no problem. Probably could use caps, some of the settings on the pots aren't working so hot. Walnut isn't too bad, should clean up nice.

Hey, for dirt cheap, they sound fine.

I think they are military etc as they do not appear here much.

It seems like they (Pioneer) really tried to make something good, but, yes, a much larger cab seems in order. Those 15s seem like they could use something like a k-horn box.

I can't look at them and not think "e-wave" by Pioneer.

I just stopped at an estate sale and after looking around quick I heard music that sounded pretty good. Finally spotted the little MCS stereo on the shelf with a price tag but couldn't see the speakers.

impressions

I've been going through my pile and checking all the functions on some receivers I'm going to sell off (AM, FM, Phono...) and these are handy where they landed coming home.

I just wanted to note that the mid range image on these is pretty phenomenal. The bass so far, has failed to impress, but the mids, wow!
Bass could be suffering bad-cap syndrome though (or they could just suck).
 
Those probably woofers want more box volume, or if they are sucky QTS wise you can better run them with *shocker* with the back off the box. Don't try that on anything but really low sound level if you don't find spec and want to avoid overexcursion btw. ;)

The 15"/multicell coax (is that a cone driver in there as HF component?) and HF driver look like they might be worthwhile for another project?... :dunno:

I was wondering what they might sound like with the back off. When I get a chance, I'll have to try that. I think your right about running them that way at lower levels.

The other thought is, they may perform better under some serious power (back on, of course).
 
If those are anything like my CS-99A's, they do need a hefty amp to open up the bass. The 99A's suffer from the same problem of too small a box.

I had a Pioneer SX-1080 connected briefly while I did some function testing on it (the SX) but didn't really do any serious listening. I've been digging out a bunch of 50wpc or less stuff. Pioneer, Sansui, Sherwood, Onkyo, Concept, Kenwood, Toshiba, Vector Research. Basically checking the units to make sure they are all working well (they are headed to market). So, its just a little AM, FM and phono checking with some aux input, etc... But some of the gear and music has synergy and I get a great image and sound stage.

I haven't cleaned the pots on them. I did notice some "iffy" behavior on one on certain settings. They are currently all set to "decrease" on mid and highs.

I moved them apart, about 12 feet, and have them tilted in toward the listening point. That seemed to bring out the mid image.
 
I know this is a very old thread, however, I thought I'd post about my CS901A's that I've owned since 1973 ? I think. I bought them when I was stationed at Kadena AFB in Okinawa - so I've had them close to 40 years now. I've gone for months at a time not listening to them, but they actually still sound as good now as the day I got them. Decent sound, not great but at least they're loud and paired with my Pioneer SX1010 bought at the same time, I can't complain. I do plan on giving them to my son next weekend since I've put together a nice vintage setup for him and he's always loved these old speakers.

Just thought I'd throw in my .02 worth ! :music:
