took a mini roadtrip today.

got a phone call from an old gentleman about a month ago saying that he got my number from his grand daughter, and asked if i was still looking for tubes.

i got his address down, but couldn't find time until now, because he lived in an island...about 2 hour trip from here.

i gave him a call asking if i can come out there after work. when i got there after 3 hours in traffic and on a ferry, he had tubes in about 10 different large boxes, but most of them were TV tubes. he was a TV repairman on the island back in the days. anyways, i ended up staying for 3 hours - listening to his stories, checking out his back yard, helping him clear out his garage, and etc. bought a small boxful of tubes and a bell mono amp for total of $60. plus $40 for ferry ride and gas. :sigh: he was actually looking up prices from his tube list book from the 70's. :D that was funny. so, he charged me $5.50 for 12ax7, $2 each for 1625's, and etc. ended up buying three 5751, pair of mullard 12au7, and some single output tubes.

it may not even be a score, but i had a great time driving, riding the ferry, enjoying the scenery, and seeing 90 year old man smile.....oh, and listening to stories of him being in the middle of WWII....got shot on the side of his stomach and all...:D

Not being able to proclaim 'scroe' does not make it any less of an experience, sounds like a nice trip to me!

The experience of the trip and meeting that old tech you describe make it sound like you've had a good time to me, and that second picture is beautiful. Thanks for sharing. :thmbsp:

That is just simply good quality time with knowledge of a man who has seen a done more than most of us ever will . Great little story .

Road trips are ALWAYS fun......especially when they come with a 'happy ending'.
That is one monster power transformer on that Bell Mono amp for sure!!!
I have a much smaller late 50's Bell mono amp (Bell Pacemaker 2285) at home, and after a recap, it sounds fabulous!

yes, it surely was a great time that i'll remember forever, but hopefully i'll visit him again.

cool thing was, him being 90, he was still working on his 60's corvette in his garage. i wish i had taken some pictures of those, but didn't wanna violate his privacy. :yes:

I'll be walking around the nursing home naked, except for a diaper.
And 'looking' for my RH84 amp, that I sold 30 years earlier.
