Is anyone familiar with University Loudspeakers Inc.? Are they still in business? Where can I find additional info? Are the components any good? Thanks.

Im sure others will opine to your question, but they made very fine speakers in their day and was very big into the sound reinforcement industry with some very big components. I do know that they were still in business in the 70's. It would not surprize me if they have gone to the wayside. I wish I had some of their units myself. Have fun with your new aquirements.

try a google search for university loudspeakers inc and see what comes up. they competed with the likes of altec, jbl, electrovoice back when.

University and ElectroVoice ended up being amalgamated into one company (which still survives). University made some fair, some good, and some magnificent drivers over the years. I have a pair of the early (stamped steel frame) 6201 coaxes, which are frankly nothing special, though I should probably change the XO cap before saying that definitively.

You'll find a fair amount of University literature at www.hifilit.com

Thanks for the info. That explains why the components are in electro-voice cabinets. I posted some info of the speakers and components in the image gallery. Let me know what you think. Thanks for the help, jeff

Looks like you have timed phase array horns up top there. Put a good tube amp on these and play them a good 20 hours before deciding if you like them or not. Need to let the engines work a bit before they run smoothly.
University tends not to be worth a lot of money so it is usually a big jump in price for a small jump in quality.

I would say that the drivers and cabinets are from way before any mergers but it doesn't surprise me. Cabinets were often sold separate from drivers so customers could pick and choose. Seeing One brand of driver in another brand of cabinet is fairly common.

Funny, I think I saw a pair of University's at the GW yesterday and wondered about them. But I believe they said made in Oklahoma on the rear of the cabinets. I'll take another look when I'm in there.

Actually, the University brand was owned and managed by Altec Lansing for most of its life. It was initially purchased by Altec in 1959. In 1985, Altec (including the University brand) was purchased by Gulton Industries, the then owner of EV. However, the Altec division (including University) maintained their own product line, manufacturing facility and management, separate from EV. In fact, the old University plant in Oklahoma City became the Altec plant that year as Altec's Anaheim facility was closed and operations were consolidated. Only when the Altec division was shut down by then owners Telex in 1998 were the few remaining University products merged into the EV product line. These details are contained in the Altec timeline here:

http://www.audioheritage.org/html/history/altec/timeline.htm

The fact that the system above was found in an EV enclosure is purely a coincidence. Someone must have purchased or built the enclosure separately and then bought University components. At the time this system was made there was absolutely no connection between University and EV since they were competitors.

Don,

you never cease to amaze me with your wealth of information!

Glad you are a member here and LH!!!

I just recently bought a pair of model(LAREDO)4 ways from university, i'm trying to find out about these myself---but apear to be heavy and well made, the drivers have heavy cast frames as well as a regular altec. the bird

im sorry i dont have a camera---not sure when i'll get one, but they are the laredo model, thanx 24inches tall, 16 inches wide , 13 inches deep, 12 inch woofer with a mustang logo, and a 8 inch difusicone mid bas unit and a twi inch phenolic dome tweeter, the cabinets are about 1 and a half inches thick, they wiegh about 60 pounds a peice. the bird

yes thats very simular, except mine are not two ways, otherwise yes, wow i'm learning more. thanks kyle, I will most likely sell them when im done with them, you know how it is---never satisfied with the same equipment for to long, always want something diferent. the bird

I picked up a small cabinet with a University 308 8" 3-way coaxial driver. Sounds surprisingly good. Very balanced sound. At first the treble was muffled, but cleaned the pot and played it for several minutes at low volume and the tweeter came into its own. Very appealing sound. I imagine this was used as a mid with a 15" woofer and supertweeter. BUt it does well as a full-range. I have heard rumors that it was designed as a guitar speaker. Can't prove it by my ears.
