Someone in the Little Rock area got a good deal on a pair of Altec Model 18's at $500 for the pair. I would have liked to try them out as all my Altec buddies said they'd walk all over the Valencia's...which I've had 2 pairs of. It would have been fun to know the comparison. Oh well... I hope whoever got them posts something about them soon...and will let me come listen to them! :D

Sounds like if I would have acted a little sooner I would have had a deal. Sigh. Oh well...I've got tuition to pay for for my last semester starting next week.

Don't sweat it. while it may not be tomorrow, another deal will come along, maybe for something even better.

I'm going to pick them up in the morning. It is a 140 mile drive. But well worth it i think.I have not heard the 18 with the Mantaray horns. How do they compare to the other 604 series. He is a super guy and has kept his word.I'm sure he was flooded with calls.I feel very lucky to get them.

I could have predicted this.

It was a heck of a trip to go get the Altecs.Sick all day yesterday.Throwing up on the way to Little Rock. Then AC takes a dump on me in 100 degree heat.I am very happy with them.I can see why they were used as studio monitors.Pin point imaging. Not as harsh as some other Altecs. One HF diaphragm is not working. The Manta Ray horn is tilted to the left side about 1/4 inch.
Does Great Plains Audio have parts for these?I hope.will post pics later.

I drove 12 hours round trip and paid three times as much and still very happy with my purchase. Mine are basically 18's, but build around 81 after the they discontinued the 18.

Great Plains should be able to hook you up with parts. I'd make sure you don't have wire connection issue or a crossover problem before looking at the diaphragm. Some times an internal connection or the lead to the coil is damaged and can be repaired. Get the part number of the diaphragm and try and get the same one to match. If you have to replace it with a Great Plains current production, then you probably want to replace both so they match.

You got a great deal!!!..

The gentleman I bought them from was first class all the way.He held them for 2 days until i could make it to LR.He bought them in Saudi Arabia in the late 70's.He knew he could get more as he was familar with great plains audio.I won't let this pair go.They best my Cornwalls in imaging and clarity.Vocals are the best I have heard out of hundreds of speakers.

Finally got these up to specs. All I can say is I have retired all my other speakers. The 604 8H is really smooth in the 620 A cabinet

Congratulations. I would like to hear a pair. I would be interested in seeing pics if you get a chance.
