SAE 8000 LED sections out

My new to me SAE 8000 Tuner has some of it's LED sections out. Certain sections do not light at all and I think some others are intermittent.

What should I be looking for to fix this.

I know a thorough cleaning is in order as the tuner has sat for over a decade.

Any and all help appreciated.

It's been a while but the segments in the LED displays themselves are probably out. There was a modification bulletin, which called for increasing the value of the resistors which control the current for the LEDs - I think the original resistors were 180 ohm half watts, and they bumped them up to something like 270 ohms. Brightness wasn't that different. Good luck.

You'll have to look around for a replacement. seven segment displays, or LED's ingeneral, don't heal themselves. It's probably broken.

It's best to get a number off the side of the part and start your search for an equivilent part.

i think I had to source a replacement when I was working for a used shop at the time. It's best to get a schematic and see if your dealing with a common cathode, or common anode part. I remember (I think) the seven segment display had a decimal point in there too. HP used to make displays like that HEDES- something or other.
 
There's a guy on feebay who sells replacement 7-segment displays for these, but they're not cheap. The originals are unobtanium.

Please excuse my ignorance but I am quite the cut and paste guy. How do I know if I have a cathode or anode LED numeral.

The ones I am finding on ebay have their contacts top and bottom not on the sides like the original.

Anyone want to point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Close, but pins are different, and display is smaller (height) If you are looking at datasheets, the a,b,c,d,e,f,g are the segments. Don't know if this will help, but they were also sold at one time by radio shack as archer 276-056.
 
Try with HDSP-3400. This is a common anode left hand decimal point display.
I replaced the displays in my SAE 8000 some years ago with it.
An alternative is the HDSP-3900 with high efficiency red. I prefer the 3400.
Pin out is compatible. They are larger (height = 20mm) but still fit in. Unfortunately the package is not black. Therefore I used a black felt pen to increase contrast.
Make sure that you get four displays that belong to the same brightness class.

Pardon my reviving an old thread, but I just replaced the display on a Mk VIII (same as 8000), and thought I would note here that Lumex LDS-A814RI is a suitable replacement and currently available. (Digi-Key specifically has lots in stock.)

The Lumex is 0.8 inch height. The package is not quite black, but to my eye they look OK in place, as is. You'll need to bend or clip off one pin where the SAE board isn't drilled. (The Lumex has both left and right decimal points, and the "extra" pin is for the unused point.)

Chazix, thanks for 'reviving' this old thread and thanks alot for posting that information about the SAE 8000's LED's.
I have two SAE 8000's tuners and one of them needs one LED replaced and the other needs two but now I'm going to replace all of them on both!

A member of the community asked for a photo of the tuner with the Lumex displays installed. Here it is. I'm aware that: (1) my photography skills leave a lot to be desired, and (2) the tuning meter illumination needs more attention.

(edit) - Oh - I should have mentioned that, with the 0.8" displays (vs. the original 0.6"), if you view the tuner with a much "higher" standpoint than the photo, the top segments of the displays can be obscured by the front bezel.

Would just like to say that I finally got around to replacing the LED's that chazix said that would make a good replacement (Lumex LDS-A814RI) for either SAE 8000 or Mark VIII tuners and-well found out that they don't work!? :sigh: I was like...WTF!

I would like to point out and this should be noted that the LED's that were replaced on the display were for a SAE 8000 tuner not the Mark VIII tuner as in Chazix post. So the two just might have differences in the circuitry so those particular LED's may not be suitable/compatiable? What I then did, I removed those new LED's and re-inserted the original's back and the unit was back to normal with just one LED missing a couple of segments. :sigh:

I don't know if anyone else tried these particular LED's on an SAE 8000 but I sure would like to hear from you if you did, what type of results did you get?

I'm very sorry to hear that, and especially sorry to have given misdirection. My belief that the Mk VIII and the 8000 were identical came from fmtuner.com, which I regard as a very reliable source. But I suppose a difference in the display circuit wouldn't be the sort of thing that would be noticed by people whose main concern is the signal path.

Anyway, my apologies again, and thanks for posting the warning.

Hey Chazix, no apology is necessary. You meant well and have the right intentions. Like you I even felt the there probably wouldn't have been a difference in the circuit since both the 8000 and Mark VIII are so similar.
It just so happens that for whatever reason they are not. When I installed the ones that you recommended thinking that problem would be solved well after installing and turning on all the display would show was some digits on others barely on, some weak light and others stronger lighting, and that was it.
So I re-installed the originals back and the display is back to normal.
But again, you had the right intentions and still it's useful information to whom ever owns a Mark VIII tuner.

As for myself I'm just going to have to keep on looking.

Oh and by the way if you need some extra LED's for the Mark VIII display send me a PM.
