JBL Metregon

I have a chance to buy a metregon at $2000 right now. its in pretty good shape with no unrepairable damage, but the top is fairly scratched. It has a 230 system - D130s, 075s, and n2400s - all in good shape. What do you think? Is that a fair price?

I figure i will likely upgrade it to a 3 way with 130A's, le175/5040's, 075's, n600's and n7000's. Any help sourcing some of those parts would be nice, too.

You know, I'm somewhat of a haggler so I'd offer a few bucks less to see what they think? Not to say that you need to low ball by any means, however I try to see what people are sitting at price wise. 90% of the time the asking price is increased over what the owner wants as they expect to have a counter-offer, just my 2 cents but has worked well for me. I love trade too so lol :D

Nice piece, just as long as you have the room for it!

Yeah, we already did the haggling. The thing is that he was initially told by someone not really in the know that it was a paragon and worth $12,000+. i had to prove it to him that it wasn't and shatter his expectations. I offered the $2000 a while ago and now that he's a ready to take it, i am having second thoughts.

It's more of a collector piece than anything else.... I think you'd get better performing gear if that $2000 was spent towards something else. But if you're a console guy or just have a weak spot for these JBL designs, then it'd probably be worthwhile.

I agree with myu701, it's to the point now where it's a "taste" issue. If you feel the desire to have it then the 2k is well worth the price, however if it appears that the love has faded some I'd just say I can't at this time. No sense in digging up an old love or want for it if it's a forced aspect, you offered the money he waited around and missed the chance. For me I'd tell him you should have jumped on it, because now I have only 1500 to spend :D lol.

Realistically it's up to you, is it worth 2k in general and if so is it worth that to you? If both is a yes go for it, if one is up in the air you can find other deals for that kinda dough.

Something else to consider, Is it a real JBL cabinet. I have a friend that has bought and sold for a long time and a year ago he offered a rough but solid Metregon cabinet to me for 500 dollars. It was home made from a kit or scratch and built very well but not by JBL.
He went on to explain there was so much admiration for the big JBL`s that many audiophiles just built their own cabinets to save money back in the day.
If it was indeed a homemade unit I have to hand it to the builder though. People these days just don't build furniture like that.
I would say if it is all real and in working order you right about fair with your offer.

I think it's a cool piece - I think a lot of people look down on them because they think it's just a cheesy small Paragon. But actually I like them, I think the design is nice, and it's a period classic piece. Another thing to consider is that there are not that many for sale - ever. I think I see two or three for sale a year, and they are pretty rare. If you are into JBL history I think it would be a fine purchase, or have a room to display it in. You won't ever lose money for sure.

I'm glad it's not a choice that I have to make.

Tough to pass up at that price if it is genuine and has the original load. A true collectors piece for the "JBL faithful".

I would probably have to "thin the herd" a bit to make room for it, but it would probably end up coming home with me.

JBL sold the bits to DIY the Metregon (of course)...
