G9000 pop in left channel

Just want to say thanks in advance for any help with the issue in this thread!

Picked up a G9K that had been in storage for 20 years. Opened it up - cleaned top to bottom. Looks like it has hardly been used. The boards under the high wattage resistors on F2809 look just like the rest of the board - no discoloration at all.

The receiver does have one small issue. I will get an occasional pop or click from the left channel. This occurs on any input at any volume and only on the left channel.

Any ideas?

I have almost finished a recap of the G9K. I think I'm going to replace the relays and the TR-05 and TR-06 transistors on the F2809 board. TR-05 looks like it has gotten pretty hot.

Do these replacement parts look right?

TR-05 - 863-MJE15033G - Mouser

I'm not for sure how much of the replacement parts are really necessary as the receiver sounds great, except for the occasional pop/clic from the left channel.

You need to isolate it to the amp first. I would not change anything untill process of elimination is complete.
 
Follow up to soft pop in left channel

This soft pop is heard at any volume level, even with the volume turned down. I do get a small soft pop when switching a or b speakers on, but it sounds a little different than the pop hear while the receiver is running.

Issue is not in the speaker.

To break it down further, you need to run the amp with a different pre-amp to make sure it is the amplifier with the problem. It is likely a bad connection somewhere and could very well be the relay, but we need to be sure that it is the amp. Have you cleaned all the controls and the connected/separated switch on the side?

It is possible that the 'pop' you are hearing is a voltage transient from some device in the house turning on or off (refrigerator or air-conditioning compressor, or some such thing).
 
Pop in left channel

Just finished a complete clean of the 90000, all pots, switches etc. Did a complete recap. Did not change the soft pop from the left channel. Pop is heard a zero volume, or at any volume, with speakers or headphones.

I also have a 901db and plugged into the same outlet, no issues.

Does it pop with the Pre-amp decoupled from the power amp via the Seperate switch? Did you deoxit said switch?

Now we can focus on the speaker relay. If I remember correctly, the G-9000 has relay for "A" speaker and "B" speaker. Try speaker "B" or whichever one you are not using.

Relays were ordered from Mouser. I ordered both speaker relays from Mouser
653-LY2-0-DC24 (speaker relay x2) and the 653-MY4-02DC24 (x1) relay. Going to replace all three.

Since I'm in there I'm also replacing the TR05 and TR06 with 863-MJE15033G and 863-MJE15032G.

I believe these are the right parts. Not for sure which of the new transitors are for TR05 or TR06?

The Onsemi parts will work, but if the originals are good, leave them be. Why do you think they are bad? It's a good idea to replace the relays, but wouldn't it be nice to know they are causing the problem......? Hope you get lucky.

I decided to replace TR05 and 06 as one of them looked like it had gotten pretty hot. The legs as well as the tab were almost all black. Don't know if it was oxidation or due to heat.

Is there are reason not to replace them?

I'll probably replace the relay's first and power it up and see if the pop is gone. I will then replace T05 and T06.

On another note, I have a G901DB that I'm going to refurbish - I'm keeping the 901DB, so I would like to put the best components in the 901DB. In reference to the caps, I see reference to UCC, Nichicon, etc. Any recommendations on which ones are "best". Any particular series, etc.?

Relays are in, same issue with soft pop from left channel. But the relay contacts were almost black. I did switch the F-2806 cards and the problem moved with the driver card.
Offset on the bad card is .430 volts-DAMN. Offset on the good card is .210mv.
What should I look for on the bad F-2806?
