A bevy of beauties

I am particularly fond of mid-70's Infinity speakers with Walsh tweeters and having finished recapping my 2000II's this morning and getting the three pairs of Walsh equipped models that I own together, I thought I'd share a couple of photos.

Right now only the Monitor IIa's, which I have owned since new and which have been completely restored, and the 2000II's are in use and being driven by a Sony TA-F700ES Integrated amp as Speaker pairs A and B. The WTLC's are all original but have not been recapped yet. Eventually when I get all of my switches wired up I will be able to use any of the three with a choice of four Sony ES CD players as the source and three other choices for amplification including a TA-E77ESD/N77ES pair, a TA-E90ES/N90ES pair, and an STR-GX10ES receiver.

I want to break in the 2000II's as I also refoamed both woofers and midrange speakers as part of the restoration, before making any serious comparison's between the IIa's and the 2000II's which driver wise are almost identical, the only difference being that the former uses a Peerless dome mid and the latter a Peerless K040 cone mid and of course the very different size and shape of the cabs. I have the IIa's on 18" stands and the WTLC's on 12" stands which accounts for the dramatic difference in height. I think they look pretty cool together.

Yes, very nice collection! They look spectacular. Owning the Monitor IIas since new says alot about that speaker as in not feeling you're missing something and buying some other and another and another pair of speakers. Well, a guess thats what you did I can never pass up a good deal on older Infinitys. I have four pair RSIII, RS4, RSIIb and Ininitesimal 0.1. I wish we had a bigger house.

Thanks for the kind words. I have a pair of RS 2.5's and a pair of Infinitesimal 0.1's and 0.2's as well but they are in other parts of the house. That is the extent of my Infinity collection except for a second pair of WTLC's and some smaller odds and ends in the garage. The Monitor IIa's sound amazing and I think the 2000II's have the potential of being just as good. The WTLC's have their own special sound, more appropriate for quieter listening I think, which will only get better once I recap them. I'd love to have a pair of RS IIa's or IIb's but I don't know where I'd put them. Being able to have the three speakers pictured in a dedicated music room together with all of my Sony TOL ES gear is going to be a real treat when I am finished.

They look very nice together. I am curious to hear which you think sound the best.

Aren't the woofers smaller on the IIa's than the 2000II's? You mention the only difference being the different mids.

The woofers in the Monitor IIa's and 2000II's are identical 12" doped paper cone CTS drivers.

To route the CD decks to the amps I use the audio side of an Ocean Matrix 4x4 A/V switch. I use two Russound AB 2.2 switches to take the output of the four amps down to 2 and then a 2x6 speaker switch to select the speaker pair. Yeh I know - lots of switches. I had all of them set up with the Sony gear in another room with different speakers so I know it works but have not set about wiring everything up in the new room yet. The only "gotcha!" with this setup is taking care not to select two speaker pairs at the same time because the speaker switch does not have impedance protection. I only did it once and fried the output stages of the TA-F700ES. It's better now.

Earlier I should have described the sound of the WTLC's as unique rather than special, which makes them more suited for quieter listening than the other two. Those little Peerless mid/tweeters work pretty hard.

Here is a shot of most of the entire setup. Since the Sony TAF700Es has an MM/MC phono input, I will probably use it alone for the B&O Beogram 4002 TT and the Teac X-1000R R to R. And for those of you familiar with Teac decks, yes I do have a spare capstan motor.
