Pioneer SX-535 static problem

Hi there,

I have a problem with my Pioneer SX-535 receiver. Everything powers up and works fine, except there is some faint static in the right hand channel. It doesn't matter what input is selected, or where the volume control is, you can still hear it. The left channel has the usual hiss you can hear when you put you ear right up to the speaker. The right channel, it sounds like FM static, a hiss with clicks and pops, very faint. All the switches and controls have already been cleaned with DeOxit.

I have a service manual for this receiver, I tried removing the inputs to the power amp board from the pre-amp section, so all the remains are the power wires and the speaker output wires, and it still makes this noise.

I'm think of replacing the electrolytic caps on this board (all nine of them), do you think a bad electrolytic could be causing this problem? One thing also of note, the "bad" channel has the output transistors replaced at some time. The service manual I have has BD509 or 2N6123 and BD590 or 2N6126 written on it beside the output transistors. Mouser stocks the 2N ones, should I try replacing these as well? They're only a couple of bucks. I suppose I could swap the transistors over from the "good" to the "bad" channel and vice versa, and see if the static problem moves with the transistors.

One further thing of note. I'm using it with my "test" speakers at the moment, some old car speakers that it won't matter if they get fried. When you turn the receiver on, the cones move all the way out and then all the way in, before returning to a neutral position. Is this indicative of power supply problems as well? I could re-cap the whole receiver while I have it in pieces.

While I think of it, the part numbers of the replacement transistors isn't the same as what is on the other channel. I'll take the lid off again and get the numbers.

I took the heatsink out and swapped over the output transistors. I wasn't sure if the problem was caused by one of those. It wasn't, the problem stayed in the right channel.

I then took the very scientific approach of tapping compenents with a pen, and sure enough, when I tapped a 2SA726 transistor, it made it crackle.

Looks like time to place a Mouser order...
