Who's Heard Of Glaser-Steers?

In my quest to find a 78 player, I found a Glaser-Steers at a flea market today. This little lady was pulled out of someone's entertainment rack (with the sliders still on it) and reported to work OK. No time to test tonight, but here are some pics. Only problem I know of so far is the right channel wire needs to be reconnected to the cartridge.

Way back in the 1950's, Mechanix Illustrated had a High Fidelity section in their multi-volume Handyman's Encyclopedia. Within that section was a few pages on TT maintenance, and the one they showed as the example was a Glaser-Steers, complete with base and dustcover! (Strange what the mind will remember...) But the one in your pix is even newer than the one I remember reading about. So my guess is maybe early-to-mid 60's. Other than that, story mentioned lubing and cleaning, nothing out of the ordinary. I'd almost venture a guess is that it almost looks like a V-M (Voice of Music), but I don't see the pop-up device for 10-inch records.

They date from about 1960 to 1963 and were also
old under the Heath, Philco, Emerson and westinghouse
brands. there were two versions, one with a two pole
motor and one with a four pole motor. I see yours
is the higher cost four pole version.
These changers had a "auto-pause" in that the platter
would stop turning when the record dropped and would nnot start up until the arm landed on the record.
They also had a "speedminder" or "autobrain" that
changed the speed by what size record it detected
I see your has an old Pickering U38 or U380 cartridge
installed that also dates from that time period.
 
i had this same turntable in the late 70's. i wish i would have kept it.
this is a extremely well built turntable & it's design was "ahead of it's time". it was the only "vintage" turntable that i would not be afraid to play my good vinyl on. that was because of the automatic stop during the changer cycle.
glacier steers was the manufacturer of that turntable up untill the mid sixties. general electric bought glacier steers & concentrated on manufacturing turntables for their own products. G.E. stopped production of the glacier-steers flagship product as soon as they aquired the company. it's a shame.
 
:thmbsp: Then it's not a V-M! I thought it might have been, but the V-M's didn't offer that auto-stop cycle thingy, AFAIK, nor the auto-speed function.

No not a VM, but it is interesting to note that VM used that auto pause platter stop
before the record drops on their top of the line professional belt drive changer
model 1550 or 1555 in 1970.
 
I have that exact same turntable! (but mine is black, not beige) I was just looking at it today in the basement to find some more info on it. I agree that it looks like a well built unit. It came out of a large homemade console I found in the trash, out of which I also pulled a DeWald tube receiver and a pair of Jensen Coaxial speakers. It is also in a pullout drawer unit, I may be able to get it looking nice enough to use with the TT.
I haven't tested it yet, but if it is working well, I will use it in my system, I would like to be able to play 78s, and this one even has stereo. It has a Shure M-70 cartridge, but it needs a new stylus.

I'd never heard of a changer that paused the platter while the record dropped before - that's a very neat idea!! :thmbsp:
