Question ??? Mach One Re-foam & STA-2290

HI...I just purchased a Realistic STA-2290 Receiver,Sansui Cassette Deck and a set of Mach One's from a 78 year old lady at a yard sale for $50.00...The Receiver and Cassette Deck are in excellent condition complete with manuals and a product catalog...The Mach Ones have Mint/Perfect cabinets but the foam surrounds are gone....I have read all about the foam replacement kits and just had a few questions...Number one,is it really as easy as as it seems or is there more to it....Second,is there a particular kit that is better than the rest...Also,will refoaming the speaker make it sound as good as it once was and will it hold/last...Is the STA-2290 Receiver a good receiver and a good receiver for these speakers...Sorry for all the questions but this forum has been really helpful in the past with some guys that really no their stuff ! ! ! I really do appreciate all the help...Thanks, Keith

Amateur thoughts to follow:

I heard the Mach I's once and I liked 'em. They are pretty well regarded around here, too. I'd say worth the effort to re-foam. (You may already know that.) Based on my limited experience, re-foaming can be a bit tedious (depending on the driver, I guess), but not terribly difficult. Anyone w/ a little hands-on ability, I would think, would do fine. Lots of good info here if you look. There's a sticky in "general" forum, I think. Not familiar w/ that receiver. I'm guessing that's an '80-something model?

Be aware that the Mach One has an odd diameter--not quite 15 inches and a bit more that 14 inches. Unless you find one made for the Mach One, it does become a bit dicey for a beginner. CRS, but partsexpress (link below gets a bit of money for AK) maybe has them.
Otherwise, have GordonW (AudioAtlanta, IIRC) or another pro speaker fixer-upper do them for you.
The Mach One is worth the effort.
 
They have Mach kits at http://www.speakerworks.net/kits.html under "Special Size Surround Repair Kit". I think its totaly worthwhile to do the I's. When I was a kid my dads frined had a pair along with the TOTL receiver and I thought they were totaly awesome. I just refoamed my first pair of speakers, its not bad just takes some time. I didn't cut the dustcover off just got it centered by hand.
 
Speakerworks kits work great. He is local to me so that is where I get my stuff. His Mach 1 surrounds fit perfectly and you will love your speaks when you are done. The Mach 1's are a great way to see if you are a fan of the "horn" sound, with it's horn mid. If you have a decent sized room they will be wonderful, though I use mine in a nearfield set-up and they are very good as well, though I most likely don't get the extension in the lows. However, I don't really notice it enough to know if I am missing anything. For the price I would say you have a great set-up and should enjoy it. Do all the other drivers work on the Mach's? If not there are a few guys on AK with parts for them. Enjoy them, the repairs are an easy evenings project and well worth it.

When you do repair them, try and do it without taking the dust caps off, it makes for a much cleaner and actually easier job. Just listen for scraping as you move the cone up and down, and pin the surrounds in place with clothespins.

Hey....Thanks to all for the info ! ! ! Today I found a pair of Mach Two's for $15.00 in really nice condition except for the Woffer Surrounds again ! ! ! I picked them up at a local Thrift Store....My wife is about to kill me because our living room is starting to look like an audio warehouse....
 
I can beat you with the living room turning into an audio wearhouse :yes: Lets see, 4 pairs of main speakers (was 5 but moved a pair to my bedroom), about a dozzen receivers, 4 amplifiers, 2 tuners, 4 turntables, 2 open reels. And that is not counting whats in the closets. :eek:
 
Boy is this sounding famililar. I picked up a pair Mach Two's cheap at a garage sale and the wife said they could not come in the house (4 pairs in already). Have them in the shop. They do not need surrounds but I did replace surrounds on a nice pair of JBL L-50's that went very well. I used as 30hz tone cd to center cone without cutting dust cover. Tone is available on internet, you only need 1 minute and play on cd walkman player on repeat thru amp hooked to woofer. Works great and look and sound new.

The Mach two's need new grill cloth as a cat must have worked one over. The grill frame is plastic or fiberglass and the cloth appears welded or glued to it. Anyone know what to use to hold the new grill cloth to the frame? I doubt staples will work.
