Sansui JBL EC-30 restore dilemma?

Hi all,
I've been a lurker for quite sometime now but I've finally managed to work up enough nerve to join you all.

My collection isn't as vast as I would like it to be, but its getting there if I find work again :D

But I managed to score a set of free Sansui JBL EC-30's for FREE!!!

But with anything that's free, it's going to need work. The 6-1/2" woofers need new foams. The crossovers are all screwed up but the POT's are fine.

Cabinets are in need of refinishing but the classic blue faces are mint!

Here's my dilemma...are they worth restoring?

I figure about 10 hours (I'm a slow worker) and somewhere around $100 (foams are $50, crossovers no idea how much, and misc) they will need together.

There only 2 ways but they have a crystal like tweeter that I hooked up on some other speakers enclosures, and surprisingly they sound really sharp and somewhat too sharp!!! But I didn't do any tuning ....

Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

First, welcome to AK...
I don't have an opinion of those speakers, but if they sound good to you then a benjamin in refurbish doesn't seem to be too much, when you are done you will know what you have.
Got pics?

I can provide pics but it will take me sometime. Batteries dead on my sony...

I have way too many SLR's lol.

I'm just trying to imagine what they could sound like with a 6.5" woofer bass reflex with a 2.5" tweeter....

I'm all into restoring but I never restored a set that's been a 2-way...always 3-ways.

I would be using these for Jazz and my man Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

ECs came in many models and shapes.

If the cabinets are in beautiful shape, and you need a project to do for fun, and it would be a learning experience, and the money isn't a problem if they don't work, and the original crossovers are still with the original caps so you know what new caps you need to purchase...sounds like a fun project.

A 6.5 inch woofer isn't that large. If your going to buy JBL speakers for the cabinets, I wouldn't do it. Too much money for not that much speaker. If you are just going to use 'other than JBL speakers' for a realistic price, go for it. Not really sure about this but make sure the speakers match the crossover arragnement.

One thing for sure: when your done and they work and sound fine you sure will know all about speakers and how to fix them!! :>)

But...for me the cabinets would have to be in fine shape before I would put any money in them. EC-30s are pretty rare in the USA. Never seen any for sale.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I know it's not worth putting new speakers into them, thats why I'm going to refurbish the old woofers in there now.

Replace the broken CAPS and crank up some Phil Collins. Then I'll see if there worth putting any more money into them.

Cabinets are in fine shape. Just need to resurface the cabinets. Nothing over my head though (I'm a carpenter finisher).

I still have to learn how to read and match CAPS. Hopefully I'll be able to pick that up quick. My electrical background is only in Motorcycles and cars.

I'll be posting some pics soon for you guys. Hang tight :D

pics as promised!! EC-30's

Finally had sometime after lunch (not feeling well, ate to fast lol) to take some snap shots of my free JBL EC-30's designed by Sansui.

Hope you guys like them. There in pretty good shape!

Now all I need is some help finding foam surrounds for them. There a 6.5" speaker but with barely of a lip to secure the foam to the frame and the foam was secured on the backside of the woofer cone.

Prob will need advice and guidance on this one :)

Talk to you later guys

JBL speakers! cool.

Sounds like a great project. And your right, that 'blue' color is great! Like the JBL 4300 series speakers.

Well, more problems arise. I'm gonna finish them...already started the cabinets finish/stripping : )

But I can't find any darn woofer foam kits that will fit my 6.5" woofers....

Cause my woofers require gluing the foam on the backside of the woofer cone.

Anyone know where I can find the proper size foam rebuild kits??

I'd be eternally grateful!!

For Free??!! Totally outrageous.

You have really nice, and 'rare' (especially in the USA: cabinets (and JBL speakers)) so restore them for sure!! I've looked at my Sansui notes and this is what I have on EC-30 model speakers.

I believe the EC series was Japanese Domestic (not international - but if they were international they were not well known), which is really cool to have for collectors. Extremely nice. Super collectors stuff and sound great! The EC-30 model seem to be 'highly desired' in Japan which is proven by the fact that they rarely come up for auction. Make that...almost never. I've watched Yahoo Japan every day and I've never seen them on Yahoo Japan. Well, in the last 5 years maybe once, or twice at best, like that.

If all else fails, you could contact JBL to refirbrish the individual speakers and crossovers. That's what I would do. They would be like new when they are done and they can check out the speakers to make sure they are on specification. But I'm sure others here in AK could refirb the speakers, or a professional speaker repair facility. Crossovers for sure would go to JBL for total restoration.

Here is some information on EC speaker systems, including the EC-30, that you may find useful or helpfull. If you need more information on EC speakers, accessories, or photos, PM me.

(P.S. I'm excited and they aren't even mine!! haha.)

:yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

I think I just pissed my self :D

I wanna thank my kindness for this find. For my friends father needed someone to put pavers in for this firewood holder (sucker is huge! Nearly 20ft) in their backyard.
So I opted to do it for free...well, just as I'm leaving I see these babies in the basement. I say, "are you guys using these for anything?".
They so no, not really.

I even offer to give them a couple bucks but they don't want any.

I'll be looking into JBL helping me with the crossovers. As for the speaker woofers, they work, but need new foams.

I'll be contemplating what I do with them. I pm'd that member and am checking now if he wrote yet....

Most excellent.

Really fine speakers. Total eye candy and very special. :thmbsp:

I've never heard of them being sold in the USA (maybe they were???) so maybe he was in Japan and brought them back or something.

In any event, you've got some really nice and rare speakers there!! And the blue color is outrageous.

Got the boxes stripped down...gonna need to find some new veneer...it's scratched to hell. Disappointed on that matter...wish they were solid wood cabinets.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy. I'll be even more happy when I can hear them at there OEM performance!!!

Sir Byrd is helping a lot with my search for proper refoam kits.

I need to find the right size cause of the whole mounting of the foams to the reverse side of the paper cones.

I also need to find that dark navy blue speaker grill color...oh boy :(

It's all in the fun!!

And worth it. The MDF might be better sounding than if they were wood.

Good luck with the new veneer job. I've always wondered how hard it is to re-vaneer. If it's too hard and you know how to do it (???)...could even somehow do that 'Shiny Piano Black' job on em, like the SR-838/929 turntables, which I also have no idea how to do, but it does look great. 'Original Vaneer' is much better...as in restored correct to period.

Keep us informed on the project!! :thmbsp:

Those are really mighty fine speakers! Very nice indeed.

So, are you sure those are 6.5"?
They look exactly like an LE8T, which is 8" and I don't think they made an equivalent that is 6.5"

Well, I measured the cone (5.75") and measured the basket for where the foam surround attaches to (6.75").

At first it did look like a 8" but after measuring and looking online, I'm convinced they are a 6.5" woofer.

Am I measuring them wrong? If so, please tell me as this is my first time rebuilding speaker components.

Cheers

A 6.5" woofer will usually have a 4" cone, measure the outside edge of the basket. Also, unless it has been rebranded, it should say LE-8T on the side.

The LE8T is supposed to be 8 1/4" in diameter. which gives about .6" for the rim of the basket, pretty sure the 8 1/4" is from the wide part of the frame to the other part.

If this is true, you have an LE8T foam surround, which should be available.

I will check as soon as I get up tomorrow...sorry but I'm at work...late shift :p

Thanks for all the help as I hope to have these working very soon.

Now what do you know about recapping? hahaha!

Cheers,
-Mike
