HK Hot Rod nears restoration completion

WopOnTour had gotten me interested in the early Harman Kardon integrated amps after I scored and turned over a 6BQ5 based Ballad. Sloober had a Ballad also. It's a fair performer.

But, have you ever had the fantasy or reality of going into your grandmother's garage and finally getting to look under the hood of that bulky old sedan she had with the pleasing exhaust burble?

Introducing a Hemi under the hood type integrated amp. The Harman Kardon A260 Chorale. I got it from a local guy. It sat in a wood case in a basement for years and he cleaned it up some but it would never look great.

I bought it, tried it out, found it not unpleasing but unfocused and kind of squishy vintage sounding. It had a lot of big capacitors and I had some giveaways or removals laying around and ordered the rest I'd need from Jim McShane as part of another order.

Fast forward a month and I was painting transformers for another project and decided to do the transformers on this chorale also.

After almost completing a project for an AK friend, I found some idle time and pulled this one out. I decided to change the coupling caps. Then I noticed some burnt looking carbon film resistors near the output tubes. I replaced them. Then I found myself replacing every resistor I had to desolder a lug for a coupling cap on anyway.

After replacing the suspect coupling caps and trying it, I liked what I heard. It snapped into focus and had some muscle.

Next thing you know, I'd hand-matched and replaced almost every circuit resistor with a carbon film resistor. We're not talking a few resistors here, but upwards of 100. I found almost no resistors within spec. The minimum drift was 10%, with drift on some that had been repeatedly been exposed to heat being upwards of 50% of stated value, regardless of the 10% silver band on the resistor.



I just ordered most of the rest of the power supply parts to finish it off.

I have high expectations. I'm kind of hoping it's like an HK250 amp with a preamp attached.
I like the concept of having a switch that bypasses the tone controls.

6L6GC. Came with Groove Tubes. Anybody got any comments on them? I had some GE's on hand and have used them so far.

I've been trying to up my standards on component quality and neatness. Of course, not starting from scratch, it's not that easy.

I wish I could find resistors and some caps with longer leads.

Some of the resistors and caps that were in there before had long leads. I used to use J hooks to fasten wire to a lead with solder, but now I twist extension wire on the leads and hide the soldered part with shrink wrap. I still haven't found a pretty way to do that though. Often the gage (sp?) of wire is different from the lead to the wire. Trying to hold 'em together with pliers before twisting up the lead doesn't work well enough to use clear shrink wrap. Still uneven twists to hide.

I'm going to hold off until it's completely done to make that judgement. Let's just say that initial appraisals didn't make me want to put it back on the shelf for later.

Great looking integrated amp. I too think that a good paint job on the transformers goes a long ways toward making a chassis look restored.

I'm getting a matched quad of 6P3S-E's from Jim McShane to replace the 6L6GBT's on my Eico's. I'll let you know how they sound.

I have found this to work very well.

First, line up the leads in a pair of locking hemostats.

Once secure, rotate the hemostats in opppsite directions and twist them as tight as you like...not too tight...the will twist apart. :thumbsdn:

You can tighten up any loose ends by keeping one hemostat stationary while loosely twisting the loose end around the lead until it is tight against the lead.

If it helps, I have both 1/2 and 1 watt takmans here waiting for install. The 1 watt offer just about 1" overall increase in length total for resistor, a little less than 1/2" per side plus heavier gage leads

You folks are a great help. I just did a preliminary order for more takman halfers. I think I'll get to the one watters later.

Thanks for those photos. That's certainly neater than what my generously flowed solder has been hiding.
 
Well, I've finally had an opportunity to finish up the power supply.
This was my first experiment of truly trying to clean up under the chassis and, while I think it looks better in person than in photos, the pictures show my first attempt at using lug strips in the power supply area to be somewhat messy. That being said, I worked hard on it and redid it a few times. It was very tight under there and I had to angle both terminal strips at about a 30 degree angle to pull the adaptation off.
I stuffed three cans, had to put one cap underneath because it wouldn't fit in a can I was stuffing, and I had to mount one cap underneath.

These integrateds are tough. This one only has about one inch of clearance underneath.
I sure learned a lot and had some fun and this thing does sound very good, though I haven't used it for more than about eight hours yet since the restoration was completed. I may go back in one more time and noodle a bit, but electrically, it's just about done. I think there were two resistors I couldn't reach that aren't replaced. Everything else is replaced. There are a couple of ceramics left I notice.
All carbon film in the signal path with the exception of the grid resistors to the output tubes, which someone recommended should be carbon fiber.
All metal in the power supply.
A mixture of fancy and regular caps.
Sounds phenomenal. The phono stage is great and so are the line inputs.
