Anybody Try The Hockey Puck As A Record Clamp/ Results?

With all the posts about the diffrent record clamps, and the sugestion as to using a hockey puck as a record clamp I was wondering if anybody tried it or did a comparison to it and the other ones mentioned in the other posts. My only concern would be that at 6oz for the weight of the puck versus other ones weighing more, that the puck may not be as effective I don't know, but I'm curious.

Thanks

Doesn't the puck get wedged onto the spindle, using a mechanical action, as well as gravity, to hold the LP down? It wouldn't need to be so heavy, then.

You could always ask any member of the NHL. It's not like they're using them for anything else!

On a serious note, it might not be ideal for belt-drive TTs. Would seem to me that the extra weight would cause excessive slippage and belt wear.

With the weight and mass toward the outside of most turntables giving them a fairly high moment of inertia to start with, a few ounces in the center shouldn't be noticed too badly.

I tried it, I think it really tightened up the bass, and cleaned up the high end, just sounds much smoother. Haven't compared it to a storebought clamp, as I'm cheap and like inexpensive tweaks. Tried it on a Pioneer PL-117D, Kenwood KD-5066, and Sony PS-X4. heard improvement on all. Give it a try. :thmbsp:

I'll be danged, the hockey puck clamp really works!

I went out and bought one for $1.99 last night, drilled a .25" hole in the center, put on an LP and rotated the puck with light downward pressure until it was snuggly clamped onto the spindle of my SL-1200. I immediately noticed how much richer the bass sounded. Everything just sounded more focused and punchier.

It worked great on my DD table, but I'm not sure it would be appropriate for a belt-drive.

Use it on my belt drive Rek=O-Kut for every record. I actually use 2 glued together as the ROK has no suspension and a huge platter bearing. Really tightens up the low frequencies.

I have to say that $25 for the ttweight is hardly expensive, even for those who are overly frugal. They also have a couple other weights that are even cheaper.

I say nish nish :nono: to the hockey puck idea. A puck turned from hardwood and filled with lead or shot would be better and more elegant looking, if one can't spare 25 bucks. :D

I may still get one of those cheaper ones, since I can't use the puck when playing 45s.

I've used the Hockey puck and it works fine. I found that the only real issue was getting precision drilling the hole, but since the puck was close to the center, this didn't appear to be an appreciable issue...

Got a turn table which comes with it's own clamp now.

Tried the hockey puck but was concerned about trying to press it into place with a suspended turntable so never did get it snug with the LP.

Just ordered the $25.00 weight and I'll report back once I've used it

Herbie's Audio Lab offers this one(bottom of page) for $22.49. Given how much success I've had with their turntable mat, tube dampers, and various unusual footers, that's definitely the first one I'd go for if I needed one. But right now I don't need one. :D

It's not $25--it's really $40 as the only shipping choice offered is UPS from Canada and he has a flat rate of $15 to ship any order. It's not a lot of money still, but to have that significant level of shipping charge for an item at that price point makes the hockey puck start to look better. That makes you wonder if a clamp such as this: http://www.kabusa.com/index_rc.htm isn't a better deal at a shipping cost half of the one listed from Canada. Of course, then you're getting into clamping vs. weighting vs. both, I suppose. Always more to ponder. Kinda makes it a fun hobby, huh?

Trust me - a $1.99 hockey puck works fine!

Both the Herbie's and the KAB are rather poopy looking if you ask me. And for an extra $15 shipping, the ttweight is still well worth the cost. In fact, I don't know of any other comparable product within that price range.

This isn't a clamp
SuperSonic Record Stabilizer:

A molded and hand-machined composite of fluorocarbons formulated for use with Herbie's turntable mats to enhance overall turntable performance. Stabilizer is not a clamp or conventional record weight -- it's designed to add virtual mass to the record without clamping. 163.5 grams (5.8..oz.)Recommended for turntables with adjustable suspension (adjust suspension to optimize performance with Stabilizer).

That's about the same weight as the $1.99 hockey puck.
