I think I am going to look at some old Forte speakers tomorrow ( the owner says there is no tag on the back ) . He says it has small horn and mid horn and a woofer . He also said it has magnets that hold on the grills . This made me wonder since I have KG4's and they do not have magnets holding the grills . Any other advice I need before I go ? Thanks By the way he wants $250 for the pair plus Sony receiver and CD player .

The Forte' II had magnets holding the grills as did the Quartets that fit that description. Both great speakers and, if in good condition, are worth $250 IMHO.

Thanks ! I was concerned that there was something amiss . How does the Quartet fit in among the Forte and the KG4 ? What other Vintage Klipsch had horn mid-range ?
Well, the Heresy I, II and III have mid horns as do the Cornwalls. I believe the Heresy III had grills held by magnets as do the Cornwall III's. Heresy II and Cornwall II used velcro as I recall. The Quartet is a great sounding speaker which uses a 10" woofer and 12" passive radiator for the low end, Tractrix horn mid range and the standard K-70 something tweeter. In smaller to mid size rooms, the Quartets can hold their own. Much better low end than the Heresy in my expereience.
The original Forte' had a 12" passive radiator but the grills were attached via pins on the frame into rubber gromets on the front baffle. If the grills on his speakers are attached via magnets they are very likely to be Quartets which isn't a bad thing. I would have him measure the woofer. If it's approx 10 inches, I will bet lunch they are Quartets.

Quartets are very nearly Forte' II so...hope you get what you're looking for and I bet you'll be happy with either...

And no, you dont have to immediately start ripping out drivers and remodeling the effin crossover. They usually sound great just the way they are.....

I am sure the speakers (what ever they turn out to be) will work and sound just fine. That does not mean that they are fine. While the plastic caps are probably ok the electrolytic in the bass section are possibly 22 years old. That is not a good age for medium quality 1990 vintage capacitors. So if you are going to change out the woofer section caps you may as well change out all the caps for high quality ones at least and you can forget about them for the rest of your life if you want to. People tend to forget about stuff like this so putting in new ones when you buy a twenty plus year old set of speakers is just good smart thinking. The same goes for buying vintage amplifiers especially tube units with their higher voltages. Best regards Moray James.

I routinely recap amps. Probably when I dont need to, also. But they are subject to heat, etc., and my own experience with this particular speaker and ones similar is that the caps are good for a bit more than 20 years. Admittedly, mine have been in climate control the entire time. But I have also driven the heck out of 'em....
The replacements are not expensive, but some people find it to be a pain in the arse to get at them and do the job...

Good job! take the grills off and let em air out outside, or dust baking soda on them and vac it off. or just wait....lol
