Eico HF85 restore tips?

Was just given a HF85 and thought Id ask if there any tips/dos/donts for doing a restore. My plan is all new Rs and Cs and new vol/tone pots. Any circuit improvements? Other things needing betterment?
Any suggestions welcome.

First thing I would do is clean all connectors and pots. You will not hear the full benefit of the other modifications if you don't.......
 
Ferninando -- If you will search here at AK and on the Yahoo Eico group, there are numerous posts that I and others have made concerning many areas that need attention on the HF-85. Some simply represent (possible) personal preference type changes, while others address obvious design flaws that should absolutely be addressed.

Jay did a superior rebuild of one of these from the ground up, so finding his thread would be a great start.

Wonderful tube pre, you got very lucky.:thmbsp: The design flaw DC speaks of is the connection of the cap and R to ground from a loudness tap maybe? I'll have to look it up and it's work time right now, but maybe someone will chime in. I think they wired them as a zoble when they should have been in series to ground?:scratch2: Anyhow, once this is done, the stock volume pot is pretty good. I built in a DC supply for all the filaments, used all silver plated teflon wire, and used the best caps I could afford. Sprague Vit Qs, Weston, and Hovlands on the output IIRC. I'll try to find that old thread.

to reiterate: I will:
put in new pots
new Rs'
new Cs
new tonecontrol parts(elim. PECs)
remove loudness parts
new RIAA parts
new RCAs
new knobs
whatever else I happen to want to do.

I think its been sitting in a shed for 40 yrs with bugs living in it and crud building up on everything. It SHOULD be completely striped and rebuilt but Im gonna try not to if possible. Its abit of a future proj as other pres have priority.

I need to know how to best address moving the RIAA parts from the sw to the tubes. I want to replace the tone PECs with parts on a little breadbrd.
I have grandious plans. Hope I fulfill em all. Any input is welcome besides what I find in search.

I refurbed one awhile back for a friend and he's is pleased as punch with the results. Say it makes $1000 pre's pale in comparison and all I did was pots, Rs/Cs(but not all) and new pwr trans. He doesnt use the phono so its stock just there.

While I asking, can I replace all the little disc caps with small film types or silever mica?

To the other recommendations, on the output, I'd add a separate cap for the feedback loop. I'd also replace those oxidized RCA jacks and figure out a way to space them for modern plugs (which may entail removing some of the ne'er used jacks as well as re-lettering the back panel).
 
If I may, on the HF-85 as designed, the output coupling cap is required to prevent DC from appearing on the output. If you move the input side of the .25 uF output coupling cap to the plate of the tone control amp (allowing the .1 uF there to then be a separate cap to drive the tone control feedback loop), you have now effectively tapped the main output into a point outside the feedback loop, which opens the door to response errors under different loading conditions. This same problem exists at the tape output connection, causing the response at that jack most often to have a bass boosted signal.

The proper fix for the circuit requires the addition of a coupling cap between the line and tone amp circuits, allowing the main output cap to be dispensed with altogether. Besides the removal of the output cap, this fix also eliminates DC on the tone controls, which causes potentially noisy operation.

At the tape out jack, the .02 cap there should be sourced from the output side of the .1 uF cap at the output of the line amp stage. This will then allow the tape output jack to in fact have a flat response as it should have.

Other design flaws exist in the power supply, where the original design provided inadequate filtering for the B+, allowing 120 Hz hum to be audible with sensitive power amplifiers and speakers.

The loudness circuit should not be removed, as that will only exacerbate the already excessive gain built into the line stages. That can be addressed as well, but to do so really requires a new line stage design.

These are areas you should potentially look at -- particularly if you are going to do a ground up rebuild. As I said, there are numerous posts available on these issues.

I would also be interested in a schematic showing these modifications, as I also just picked up a HF-85.
It was in pretty nice shape, the can cap was pulled out of it
and there was some mod done to the loadness switch. I replaced
the can cap and several other caps some orange drops that I
had on hand, just to confirm it was working.
So I'm now looking to go forward.

Dave, do you have any suggestions on the value and placement of that coupling cap between the line and tone amp circuits?
 
I'd be interested in seeing the idea of a new line stage design and eliminating the loudness circuit. I haven't met a loudness circuit yet that was universally usable and pleasing, especially in the Eico stuff. My Pilot sp 215 pre has four curves that kill the tone! lol But, it's the one I use over my stock HF85 which seems way loud and brash to me by comparison. I'd like to get my 85 closer to something that was more useable for me.
 
I got this schematic from the Yahoo Eico Group files and it looks like a modified HF-85
line stage without the tone controls.

If I use a 500K Alps pot without the forth tap for the loudness circuit can the switch, C31
and R23 just be removed from the circuit, does it need to be there on this modified line
stage?

I would like to build another preamp and use this modified HF-85 line stage and keep
it as simple as possible.
