Vintage 3-ways for around $250

Hello all, this is my first post.

I am looking for some decent vintage 3-way speakers for around $250 or less.

I have a Harman/Kardon HK3470. 100 watts per channel.

I live in a condo on the second floor so I don't want anything earth shattering.

I had some Bose 301's but I didn't like the sound. I am looking for something with decent bass, nice mids and highs.

I just started researching and I have a few local deals in consideration:

Cerwin Vega DX-9
Cerwin Vega E-312
Infinity ss2005
Klipsch Kg3

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't want anything earth shattering i would cross the cerwin vega's off your list unless you don't crank your volume much.
 
I have a pair of cerwin vega D-5'2 in nearmint+ cond. All refoamed and with the original packing and boxes. Let me know if you are intereted.
 
There are SO many good speakers in that price range, many Boston A series, a ton of JBL's, many DCM's (Time Windows, Time Frames and several CX series), quite a number of Polks, a number of Infinity models (many good, many aren't, like most brands, so be sure to ask first) etc.

Cerwin Vega's would be on my personal list to avoid...and I've have a pair of VS-120's and have owned some RE25's. I'd not look at anything on your list to be honest.
 
I have been going back and forth about getting rid of these speakers.
They are so rare, they sound great!
I have listed them online and then when I got a response, I told the guy I changed my mind and I wanted to keep them.
Rectilinear 4 1/2's
10 inch woofer with butyl surrounds, fat midrange dome, and nice clear dome tweeter. To an AK member, I may get rid of them.
Does this talk need to be in for sale/wanted section?

A guy called me today wanting to pick them up, even though I pulled the ad yesterday. I told him, I better keep them. They are so rare.
What model of Rectilinears do you have?

Yamaha NS690's if you can find a pair in that price range.

Acoustic Research 38b speakers are what I suggest, not too big but they sound great at any volume level.
 
Go listen to the kg3; the CV's wish they were Klipsch...neither brand may be your cup of tea, however - you need to hear them. Watch for Paradigm, hard to go wrong with any of them, and there are usually some around. (Sorry, CV lovers, just my opinion.)

Infinity made some great speakers - I don't think those were very noteworthy.

Also, the old AR's were great speakers, but can be more of a project than many folks want to tackle - depends a lot on your patience and handiness, and can get a bit pricey, too. If all the work has already been done, then will be out of your stated budget - unless you just got extremely lucky with a motivated seller.

Oh, and the KG3 aren't 3-ways. If you find Paradigm or Klipsch 3-ways in that price-range, jump on them. Many 2-ways, however, do out-perform many 3-ways, so I'm wondering why you specified 3-way?

RSL 3300 Monitors are quite nice and can be had on the cheap.

Dahlquist DQM-9s pop up sometimes and are spectacular. All of the M-90X line can be had in your range as well and sound wonderful with their Vifa drivers.

Almost all of the DCM Time frame line can be had at or below your price.

You should become a subscriber and check out barter town.

Can't say enough about my ADS L730's. Put them up on some 16-24" stands and you will be amazed! That 100 watt HK should drive them just fine!
 
Boston Acoustics A200 are very clear and not thumpers. They also are designed to be placed against a wall and are only 5" thick. Space is important in a condo

They probably fit your application perfectly.

Big fan of the A200, and they will outperform everything on your short list for less money that you have budgeted.

Time frames are also an excellent speaker for that money.

I agree...always loved ads speakers, but it seems prices on them have been steadily rising...could be hard to find L730s this affordably...but maybe not impossible. Depends on your local market, shipping is high.
