This is still a project in process but far enough along that today Watt and I did a little test and tune. We both really liked what we heard. Now to add the second cabinet brace, build the crossovers and veneer.

We used the original crossovers for the initial test. We ran the wires out of a port tube because the backs have not been cut yet for terminals.

Now we just need this guy to make some decisions about veneer. :D

Thanks again, Luther. These look and sound spectacular. And I think they're only going to get better.

Yes, the additional bracing and the better crossovers will only improve the sound. The furniture grade finish and the inset grill/cloth will greatly improve the esthetic.

The basic design is a 620 cab. The cutlist above will allow you to 45 the corners. I trimmed after cutting to do butt joints. Also used different bracing, and porting. The front baffle is recessed and a bottom fill panel used to allow a recessed grill.

I keep coming back to this thread, these cabinets are gorgeous and they provide an element of protection from little fingers. :)

Well, if neither Watt nor Wardsweb object, I think I'd like to use this design to build out for my Altec 605B's.

I do have a couple of questions though:

1. Are the braces butt jointed as well or did you dado them?

2. What are the size of the ports?

3. How high up does this place the center of the drivers from the ground?

The originals look like this with the vertical port. Some versions use the same dimensions but have the port horizontal.

Watts cabinets are a little different as you can see. The front baffle is inset 3/4" to allow for the grill to sit almost flush with the sides. They use a totally different bracing system. They sit on a 2" skirt with removable spikes. The ports are now dual round and the crossover is inside with the attenuator in the upper right corner of the front baffle.

Watt can fill in the final version of crossover he used and how he lined the cabinets with Roxul.

I've noticed ribs on the back of my 605 frames which would make front mounting the driver difficult. Watt, did yours have those and if so how dis you guys deal with them?

Oh yeah, the ribs.

They were a nice little surprise when we did a test fit in the cabs. With the cabs on their backs, we (wardsweb) put the drivers in the cutout and pressed down enough to leave an indentation in the wood where the ribs were. Then we (wardsweb) used a handsaw to cut where each indentation was. That's what allowed the drivers to be front-mounted.

I love these speakers. Thanks again, Luther!

And if you're keeping score at home, I ended up with the markwart xover with MF compensation. The back wall and one side of the cab are lined with 2" batts of Roxul.

I cut at about a 45 degree angle and then followed that up with a round file. You cut just enough for the ribs and not all the way through the front baffle. These were really intended to be back mounted but that wasn't the look we were going for.
