Shipping damage on MC2205 bought through ebay

I received my MC2205 today vis UPS and it has been severely damaged.
The front glass smashed, the glass metal frame bent, the bottom end cap screw sheared off, and several gouges in the top heat sink where the SRC-2 speaker relay was placed on top during shipping.
I specificaly stated in a email to the seller to bolt the unit on a wooden base plate and place in a box-in-box packaging but he ignored my suggestion.

Can someone give me an idea as to repair costs? I guess I should also include shipping to and from the repair facility?

Not worth the $$, time and effort involved. Get your money back and find another one. The MC2205 is plentiful if you watch eBay and Audiogon. Or, get one with a warranty from folks who know how to ship. That would be Audio Classics or Tom Manley.
 
Thats sad, do you have a picture of it in the shipping box? Those are always fun to look at. I can't believe the seller used bubble wrap, that stuff is good for light weight glass vases but not for heavy stuff. They should use foam wrap. They could have gotten a scrap piece of plywood at any lumber story, bolts are less then 2$ for 4. Really sad. As was said, forget about it. Get your money back and find another. Or you can attempt to get a good size of it refunded and repair it. Projects like this are funny, if you bought it in that condition...but when your hoping for a mint working unit its no fun.
 
What the others have said, get your money back. And the next mc2205 you purchase, buy the proper shipping container from McIntosh Labs or Audioclassics and ship that to the seller to use! Avoid this head and heart ache.
 
May as well get your money back if the lower rail is bent, new rails do not exist and straightening one is almost impossible.
 
It hurts to see a beautiful piece of gear like that smashed due to negligence. Like other members have suggested its probably best to return it for a refund and start a new search. Sorry for your misfortune and trouble.

If it was the auction that I saw, it was sold by one of those Sell It On Ebay vendors, right (i.e. not an individual seller)?

Ugh, such a pity. Looks to be an otherwise clean unit. Of course...it probably still works...

well if you get 80%-90% of your money back... I would keep it and send it to Terry.. and yes I bet it works and still sounds awesome..its a MAC!
 
That is why I've all but given up on buying amps on the internet, at least from the bay. I had 8 out of 10 amps I bought online all show up in about the same condition. File a claim with UPS Although it doesn't look like the seller followed UPS's minimum packing guidlines. That is a terrible shame to see a MAC in that shape.
 
I think you will find that the shipper will have to file the claim as he is the one who paid for the shipping.

I hope someone salvages the usable parts....
 
Thanks everyone for your feedback. The seller has contacted me and was very nice about the incident. He brought it to mail boxes etc. because he wanted it to be packed right and arrive without damage. They charged him big $$$ for the pack.
A claim has been filed with UPS and I will receive all my cash back as soon as the sender receives the amp back which should take about 2 weeks in my estimation.
Now that I have another chance, should I look for a MC2255 to compliment my 2105? From reading previous comparison posts it seems that this would be a step up.

Here are some pictures of the box. Have to give them some credit with the "fragile sticker". It looks like they rolled it round the shop.

It's funny though, I've introduced my 20 yr old son into vintage audio and he bought a Marantz 2030 receiver that he received today in perfect order, double boxed with custom cut styrofoam packed around it and he only paid $100 for everything!

If it was UPS or FedEx, if a claim is filed, they own the unit and will NOT give you the money and the unit. Also, the money goes to the seller/shipper, not you. You have to get the money from him.

When you buy something like a Mac on ebay you have to look for a seller with a 99.9% or better rating of maybe 100+ items who has sold a large number of expensive audio units, not baseball cards. It's not perfect though. I bought an MR77 from an audio dealer that came smashed (got my money back),
 
Yes, I understand the refund policies. The seller agreed to a refund through PayPal as soon as he gets the unit back. Does anyone know how long it takes UPS to process claims such as this?

This was the one I contacted you the other day about to have cleaned and re-capped. Unfortunately it looks ilk the rail is bent.

OMG that is horrible. If I was the seller, I would take these photos to the pack n ship place and demand a full refund of the selling price plus shipping. I would then tell the buyer to keep it and refund the money. I wouldn't ship it back yet, I would tell the seller to go to the place and demand the money. Its not his/her fault nor UPS is the pack n ship place. UPS will not refund any money on this.

The sad thing is, you can get all the dorrect packing materials at Home Depot.

So you mean to tell me that UPS will not reimburse on a packaging issue from a franchised mailboxes etc. and I may not
get my money back on this? Don't scare me here! The unit was insured....

Its very hard to get money back on anything shipped through UPS. I have not personally experienced any problems. You can just look at the package and see that its the fault of the packer. You can call ups and send them photos via email and see what they say. But I can promise they will not take liability.

Heres a thread about a clock that was very well packed and they refused her claim.

Now if you have opened a claim through ebay, ebay will require you to place a tracking number on the package. Once delivery of the package occurs ebay will issue you a full refund. Then they will go after the seller for the reimbursement. This I know personally, as I have had buyers place false tracking numbers in. When I called ebay they closed the case in my favor as the seen the buyer never sent the item back.
